I dropped Epoch for Nicora.
Actually, although Turley Wine Co. buys some grapes from Napa, I believe their two winemaking facilities are in Paso Robles (main) and Amador. You may be confusing Larry Turley’s company with Helen Turley.
Mary, that’s simply not true. Larry Turley started the winery in St. Helena in 1993, which remains the company HQ. The Paso winery was acquired from Pesenti in 2000 and the Amador winery just a couple years ago. As far as what gets crushed where, I imagine that’s simply a matter of logistics, but I’ll always consider the St. Helena winery the “main” winemaking facility, which I’d guess gets all the Napa & Sonoma grapes.
There’s a good summary of the history here:
No knock on Daou, but don’t they need to establish a little bit of a track record before they can be in the “royalty” conversation? I realize their pockets are deep and their facility is beautiful, but on a trip their last summer they weren’t even using estate fruit yet. The views from the patio are sensational, but I’m not ready to say the same thing about the wines yet.
They do make estate only wine just very limited and not poured in tasting room. Soon, as you know, they will be making much more estate wine and in really look forward to the release of to Kalon estate.
Daniel and George are great guys.
