Delectable/Vivino (wine apps) discussion - merged thread

I use WB to hang with my geek friends, I’m not sure why I still use Facebook as it is becoming extremely irritating, Delectable is wine and wine consumption based. Direct, to the point, quick to navigate, doesn’t crash my browser like FB does, doesn’t bombard me with advertising…

you might need a new computer if FB crashes it [snort.gif]

My thoughts exactly.

I have (or had) Vivino on my phone, but I never really got into it, for me it lacked the interactivity of something like UnTapped (which is for craft beer)

Also I think perhaps the enormous variety of wines available compared to beer makes it harder to create a wine equivalent. I’ve also found that with most of the wine I drink being from small vineyards in New Zealand the app didn’t recognise the label and I’d have to enter I’m everything manually, not ideal, especially for something that should be fun and quick.

i like untapped cause you can follow ppl that are nearby posting notes. I don’t see that on delectable.

Sort of a Tinder of beer? [snort.gif]

Vivino is mediocre at best. I tried to use it for several months and it probably got 90% of the wines wrong.

I start with Delectable, then if the wine deserves mention (good/bad/ugly) I will post to FB/Twitter/Instagram. For WB I just directly post tasting notes via CT, but again, Delectable has helped me remember what I’ve had the night or two before.

That’s rather generalist to say, no? A lot of us use it for journaling our wines, whether you think so or not. Some do use it for bragging, but it’s easy to filter those people out by simply not following them. Sort of like those here who brag about fancy lunches and dinners with $2,000 of wine on the table…

Bump…

This looks awesome, thanks for sharing. For me I would prefer just uploading a restaurant’s wine list from their site and get a CT/wine-searcher breakdown on my big screen. But got the app to try it out next time.

I love Delectable. It is way beyond label recognition.

The social - consumer - professional connection is unparalleled.

Here’s another one I just came across that looks a bit different/interesting: http://nextglass.co/.

It’s sort of like Wineglass, in that it’s more “decision support” for lower-end customers to help them choose wines at retail or in a restaurant – but with some serious Big Data analytics behind it.

Beta should be released soon.

I’m interested to check it out, since if the “technology” works it could have some interesting applications across the industry…

This is also a big selling point for me for not just Delectable, but all of these social networks (including Instagram, etc.) where I see there’s an active wine community. It’s great being able to interact with winemakers and other industry professionals. And while it would be easy for so many of them to just keep posting about their own wines – they don’t. So for sorta newbies like me, it provides a great introduction to some interesting wines and a bit of an education at times, too.

Curious to see who is using this…seems like Twitter but obviously specifically focused on wine. Yet, Twitter still seems to have more wine activity.

I use it, primarily as a memory aid, though it can also be helpful in getting updates on wines from some people I follow whose palates I know to be similar to mine. And it is kind of fun to see what winemakers I respect like Carole Meredith, Cathy Corison, and Hardy Wallace are drinking.

Twitter activity depends on who you follow. If you follow lots of wine drinkers, then yes there is a lot of wine activity.

Delectable is only wine (and a little beer). It is a good memory aid/wine log. There is a sense of community and conversation, but less so than Twitter. Though depending on who you follow it is also like a wine porn site…

Use it daily. Never use Twitter. I echo Mikes bit about seeing what my favorite or most intriguing winemakers are drinking. Get to keep a pictorial listing of what I am drinking that is more easily accessed than with Cellartracker. The facial recognition software works almost every time.

Software will recommend wines in specific price ranges based on what you are already drinking. You can check the history of your particular wine in the community. Also directs you to a retailer selling a wine you enjoy.

I really enjoy using Delectable. There are lots of good people using it that are a lot of fun to follow. I use it daily and there is always a lot of interesting activity on it.
