BERLIN RIESLING CUP

Yesterday for the third time I organized&hosted the “Berlin Riesling Cup” by presenting 30 Große Gewächse (Grand Cru Riesling) from the vintage 2009. I served these Rieslings blind to a group of journalists, sommeliers, wine-dealers and Riesling lovers . Especially the first 9 flights showed dry Riesling in perfection. It doesn´t get better, only different.

That had to be a fun evening! [welldone.gif]

German taste has swung firmly in favour of dry wines, yet British buyers still seem to think German wines should be sweet(ish) to appeal to old ladies who daren’t try anything else.

On this side of the pond, if we are really old fashioned and superseded like the Brits who won’t try dry Riesling, we’d say dassn’t instead of daren’t. Sniff! (seems to be a missing emoticom)

Looks like a fabulous evening, Martin! Were you able to see any progress in the wines from last month in Wiesbaden (sorry I didn’t really able to get to spend any time with you)?

Yet another showing that the real story in Germany right now is Rheinhessen (and not only KPK by any means), although I think you were a little light on Franken wines.

Where’s the Pigott M-T from? Pottsdam?

No jj prum? Was that intentional?

i got this one.
jj prum does not make a trocken wine.
i think lyle has an anecdote about this if he wants to pipe in

Some wines showed better thanks to my ZALTO Universal stemware. My favourite regions from Wiesbaden were …Nahe, Mosel and Rheinhessen.
But I have admit that 09 Wirsching Silvaner J-E-B was outstanding. It is a Silvaner not Riesling.

The Müller-'Thurgau from Stuart is made in Franken at the estate STAHL.

Take care,
Martin

Some great photos concerning german winemakers and vineyards!

Rheinhessen rules, huh? Who imports Keller into the United States? Or do they even bother with this wine?

A big thank you to Martin for inviting me. An eye opening experience, some truly great values. My tasting notes with plenty of photos:
