Ditto. I have much less breakage with these than with Riedels. Of course that didn’t stop me from picking up some Riedels when Sierra Trading had them at a big markdown earlier this summer.
I’ve had two of the Zalto’s break in my dishwasher to date. I’ve never had a Riedel break in our dishwasher. Despite the breakage of the Zaltos I still love them and how they improve the wine that I pour into them and am willing to incur some breakage of the Zaltos.
Just back from Austria and thought I would report the street price. Universal 30.5 EUR, Bordeaux 31.5 EUR, Burgundy 32.5 EUR, and IIRC they had a decanter for roughly 60 EUR. Their “dump buckets” were available in 2 sizes and widely used by better wineries.
Rudi Pichler designed his own Zalto and it is only available at a wine store in the Wachau.
I only had room for 4 Burgs, so that is all i made it home with.
[quote=“J. Singleton”]Winemonger is sliiiightly less expensive than Wine Enthusiast. Shipping is much better too. I don’t know that there is a magical place out there to get them on the cheap.[/quote
One has gotta’ support Wine Monger for Zalto…besides price, they were the early ‘believers’…
A limited number of the Riedel Somm Burg and Bdx glasses in the restaurant series (a bit thicker and sturdier?) have just been made available for $44/stem at reddcollection.com (NFI). The Somms are a bit unwieldy for me. I may need to try the Zalto Universals after reading this thread. Have loved other Zaltos but haven’t tried the Universals.
I love my Zalto Champagne glasses, which I feel work the best for … wait for it … Champagne. Seems odd to me that people would have such high praise for a particular glass manufacturer and then completely disregard said manufacturer’s recommendation for which glass to use for which wine. The size and shape is a large part of the beauty and performance of Zalto glasses, so if you’re going to ditch the recommended size and shape, why bother even using them? Why not just use Burgundy glasses for everything (which I have seen some people do)?
Just because the manufacturer recommends a particular glass doesn’t mean they’re right…or right for any particular person. More than a few people on this board as well as winemakers, etc… prefer white wine glasses for Champagne vs. a typical long champagne glass…
