I stopped buying Yquem in halves. Bought a case each of ‘89 in 375 and 750 and the 375s, now gone, were all inferior to 750s from the same source, Chateau & Estate Wines, the authorized importer.
I think that’s a very good point. The variation in colour is as startling as the variation in flavour, however, and half bottle seems not to be a good format for Sauternes in general. At least three of those were taken at modest luncheons where the palate certainly hadn’t flagged; it hasn’t seemed to me a wine(or a vintage) that is anything like as spectacular as its reputation but I haven’t had it from 750 let alone magnum.
I don’t think there’s any region where recent improvements have been as spectacular as they have been in Sauternes/Barsac, I only wish I had some appetite for the wines.
I like the format for drinking utility but certainly it ages better in 750 and mag.
Want to do a side by side event sometime? I also have some ‘01 Sud I’d be curious to taste off.
Yeah for sure; we should definitely do it at the beginning of a dinner and not the end, though. I have lots of well stored bottles of Rieussec too.
100% I prefer Sauternes up front. Champagne reset, then regular programming.
