Egon Müller’s 2023 Scharzhofberger Kabinett retails for 170 euros in Trier.

That is insane!

I know. Just looked up current pricing on current vintages.

But as an example then I paid 186€, for a 2022 Julian Haart 6pack, which had 4x Goldtröpfchen Kabinett and 2x Fass3 Kabinett (young vine Goldtröpfchen).

I would pick the Julian Haart case any day.

You know the pricing on Falkenstein
And Hermann Ludes top Kabinett’s sells for 19-22€…

It is very hard for me to justify buying Müller personally. Too much top quality riesling in the lower brackets.

So when I spend a higher amount on a bottle it is mostly in other areas where it is much harder to find the same quality at lower prices.

When I started attending the auctions in 2010 you bought Egon because it was the same price and sometimes cheaper than the regular version.

I’m buying fewer bottles these days. But then I’m not buying much of anything.

I agree with David. As far as I know, they have standard Seitz plate-and-frame pad filters, which are common among winemakers in Germany, yet so much depends on the type of sheets and how fine they are. Do they rack and filter before bottling? They might use crossflow or kieselguhr filtration as well. Some producers use various filtration systems, including membrane filtration, at bottling. But I believe they have Bucher vertical basket presses for a part of their production.

And that’s a good price. But, to be fair, it was the same price for the previous vintage.

I genuinely don’t know if that’s extraordinarily high or low.

That’s a good one.

Got an offer this morning for a 12 bottle case of 2020 Kabinett for $2000.

I couldn’t agree more. In Burgundy, that’s to be expected. The prices are, across the board, much higher.

Let’s see, I can get 6-8 bottles of Donnhoff Kabinett for one Egon Muller. I can also avoid alimony payments, by not paying $180 for a bottle of Kabinett and staying married!

But if Egon Müller can get those prices. Good for him! It’s also not bad for the region.

it is why i don’t have more of their wines. For a lot less money, for Saar wines I am happy with Zilliken and Falkenstein

That’s the problem for many of us. It’s only a certain class of people who can afford Egon Müller nowadays.

Top 25 German Riesling in CT as ranked by aggregate purchases since incept. The swap of Prum ↔ Donnhoff at #1 is interesting. Makes sense as I see D at restos far more than Prum. The rest of the Top 25 has some small movement and a few new players at the bottom.

Egon’s wines (as were his father’s) are extraordinary so it’s hard to argue he and his distributors/importers shouldn’t take advantage of strong demand and limited supply if he can. I don’t begrudge it. I just never wanted to play. Still I couldn’t resist 2021 Kabi at a good price. And if you think of all the ho-hum wines one could buy at $180 a bottle or even more for the Spatlese, I start to question why I always mentally excused Burgundy pricing the last 15 years but passed on Egon. It’s the same mentality that had me pass on 1999 DRCS and Rousseaus 20+ years ago, and that was wrong with 20-20 hindsight. So those who can afford it, you will not regret buying the Muller wines, especially Scharzhofberger, but you might regret passing.

Very well said.

Who are the Top 25 German Riesling producers in CT as ranked by aggregate purchases since 2016?

Do Egon’s wines sell through at those prices? I always got the sense they weren’t flying off shelves, at least where I am, but I’m not certain of that.
