Your Greatest Wines (by some interesting categories)

Here’s some fun categories to consider:

What’s the greatest wine you’ve ever had that:

A) Nobody’s ever heard of . . .

B) Cost a [relative] pittance

C) Is so rare, that few have ever shared the experience

D) Actually lived up to its obscene hype

E) Was so good, you’d consider committing a crime to get another bottle

D) SQN Poker Face
E) See above

I’ll second the Poker Face

My Selections:

A) 1973 Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon

B) 1958 Louis Martini “Special Selection” Cabernet Sauvignon ($6.95)

C) 1978 Diamond Creek Vineyards “Lake” Cabernet Sauvignon

D) 1929 Chateau Latour

Strong.

A) - Still working on this one…

B) 1934 Thorin Volnay 1er Clos des Chenes - ($174)

C) 1913 Senard Corton Meix en Magnum, 1983 Ch. Margaux en 4.5L, 1904 Musigny

D) 1990 DRC La Tache

E) 1971 Vogue Bonnes Mares, 1942 DRC Richebourg, 1948 Grahams

George,

I take it you mean one wine for each category? Here are my wines:

A: Passion-Haut-Brion 1955, I believe this sub-plot inside Haut-Brion’s boundaries has been resurrected recently, but I’d never heard of the vineyard until I tried this. It was amazing.

B: Cheval-Blanc 1947, a wine merchant on Jersey found a couple of bottles of this in their cellar and thought them so old they must be vinegar. I snapped them up for a paltry £15 (~$24) a bottle. They were in top nick and fascinating to taste.

C: Clair Dau Musigny 1969, anyone out there who has tried this wine (well-cellared, of course) is a very lucky person.

D: Mugnier Musigny 2001, or 2005, not universally popular on this board, but by arse did these wines deliver the goods for me.

E: Muginer Musigny 2001 or Roumier Bonnes-Mares 1995, I own but a bottle of each and I would perform obscenely biological forfeits to have more of either. Super-top-bunny-kit.

Cheers,
David.

Oh…on another note…the rarest wine that I’ve ever had is a lovely blend of 1989 Henri Bonneau CDP Celestins and 2005 Maybach Cabernet Sauvignon.

I saw it…didn’t taste it.

I was greedy…nobody else at the table was allowed to taste.

I bet you would have given one of the Gang Of Three a taste…

Only had it out of magnum - only six times neener

I share with none!

Baller.

Wow, really cool topic. I really need to think about a couple of these categories.

Cheers!

a) '34 DRC Richebourg Vieux Cepages

b) 1892 Cos d’Estournal for $400

c) '66 Krug BdB - “a” and “c” are interchangeable

d) '71 RC out of mag

e) see a, c and d

Oooh you’re so flash! [wink.gif]

David,

I’m a bit surprised to hear you mention this wine since you’re not a fan of Jadot Musigny.

Hello Ray,

Oh it charmed me no end. It is still the oldest Musigny I’ve tasted and it did show they can age really gracefully; really, really gracefully. I’ve never had a Jadot wine at a comparable stage of evolution so I cannot honestly compare the Jadot and Clair Dau Musigny experiences in a completely meaningful sense. Perhaps I should get a Jadot and forget about it in the cellar.

Cheers,
David.

A) A bunch of private label/Hospice Burgundies.

B) mags of '70 Ridge Jimsomare (bought a couple of years ago ~$200/each)

C) US: 1946 BV Pinot Noir. Bdx: 1844 Lafite. Burg: 1865 La Romanee.

D) 1990 La Tache and 2000 Lafleur.

E) There are a number of these…

Cheers!
