Your favorite Mouton Label

I suppose my answer may change depending on whether it’s for the wine label, or to hang on the wall … I’ll just keep it on the wine label level …

Another for 1988.

Probably Anish Kapoor 2009 with the worst being Jeff Koons 2010 - in such bad taste, besmirching such a great wine

Next worst would be Prince (as he was then) Charles 2004

Very few are remarkable apart from splashes of colour and many of them are bling

1988 was my first Mouton, and my first FG, so that has to take the cake. Luckily the Haring label is such a cool, iconic one. I have couple birth-year 2020s in the cellar for my older kid, and I play guitar, so I really like that one as well. Honorable mention to 2002, have always dug its vaguely ominous vibe.

There are a lot of great and fun labels and many that do not appeal to me. But, that is art for you…it is autobiographical (of the artist and the “viewer”).

Not a fan of 2017.

I am partial to 2018 only because I consider Xu Bing a friend.

Easy call for me, the 1970. My birth year plus one of my favorite painters:

I view a label as an image to include the spectacular 2000

That’s like the tackiest bottle of wine ever made

Looking at the current pricing of 2000 Mouton, both auction and retail, there does not appear to be a tackiness factor involved, even after earlier overheated market segments and subsequent corrections. Do you think the prices would be higher with a different label?
It sells for much more than other Moutons with considerably stronger reviews and ratings for both vintage over all and for Mouton more precisely for some reason.
What do you think, Keith?

They were pretty much all good up until the gaudy 2000 (excluding perhaps 66, 75, 77, 93, and 99). After that they’ve been pretty uninspiring; a low point being the 2010 from Koons (a joke of an artist).

Being gratuitously expensive doesn’t make it less tacky, it makes it moreso, like a gold-plated toilet.

Luck of the draw that the Picasso is on a poor vintage and Huston, who is not primarily a painter, gets one of the greatest vintages.
Kudos to the family for not only commissioning famous painters.
However Chuckles the Clown was much worse than a step too far.
Other painters who were not professional that I would have liked to see on the labels :
Winston Churchill
Anthony Benedetto

The gold-plated toilet is supposed to be tacky.

Tacky is in the eye of the beholder.

Gold toilet owners probably consider them the best ever.

One is entitled to their opinion.
My point which you seem to have missed is that the market has determined its value above other Moutons for some reason, Could it be the image on the bottle?
I am aware the price rose impressively at one point due to an overheated market, but 20 years later it is still commanding a higher price than other Moutons.
If you consider it expensive that is irrelevant, the market says it is worth more than other possibly better vintages regardless of price point.

Only up to a point. One’s evaluations are one’s own, but not one’s interpretations. If you don’t think the gold plated toilet means to be tacky, I think you are misinterpreting it, regardless of what pleasure you take in its. appearance.

I’m not following Jonathan. A gold plated toilet, or any inanimate object, doesn’t mean to be anything. It simply is, and different people will evaluate it differently, based on their own values.

If you’re making a point about evaluation vs. interpretation…

Tacky as an evaluation, which was how meant it, is still in the eye of the beholder. An object may be seen as an obvious display of… either taste or lack of it depending on the individual doing the evaluation.

As to interpreting some deeper or obscure meaning, it still seems to me that we each may have our own differing interpretations of the same object, though we may be open to accepting a different interpretation. Is it meant as a display of power? Wealth? Integrity? Intelligence? Humor? Are not those interpretations our own?

The gold toilet is an artwork. Artworks re intentionally created and have meanings.

I wasn’t talking about the gold-plated toilet. I was talking about a gold-plated toilet. Also, I believe the purported “artwork” you’re talking about is solid gold, not gold-plated. (Unless calling it solid gold is just part of the con.)
