Your Coffee Arsenal? (Maker, grinder, etc)

Thanks for this great tip. Our stainless carafe looks like new— and the brew tastes better, as well.

After using a basic Krups burr grinder for the last year or so, I broke down and bought an Ode 2, delivered 2 days ago. I love it! Much faster and quieter than the Krups, and the anti-static features work! I can physically see an improvement in the grind size and consistency. I do a simple pour over, two large cups a day. Not sure my palate is good enough to discern a real difference in taste, but the aesthetics of the unit gives me pleasure when using it.

What kind of coffee do you normally drink?

Mines only four or five years old, no ‘clunk’. There is a slight extra noise when it first hits boiling temp. Doesn’t sound untoward.
How old is your machine? Sound like heating coil working loose.
Reliability generally excellent.

My bean of choice is from Mountaro in CA, a dark espresso roast called Stratis.

Over 10 years.

I’m pretty ignorant about appliances. Do I do anything about it or just use it until it doesn’t work and then replace? Or is a repair a good idea..

I highly recommend Gracenote coffee out of Boston. Their Ethiopian espresso is excellent and is on the lighter end of the espresso spectrum.

I would try grinding a lot more coarse than normal. That’s where the grinder would start to pull out more nuance in those beans. Obviously too coarse and you’ll have weak dirt water but it’s fun to play around with

You have descaled regularly?

this from ChatGPT:

chatGPT Moccamaster diagnosis

Regularly, but maybe at 150% of the recommended interval.

Have you tested your tap water for TDS assuming you use tap water. I had a finicky brewer lock up since I filtered with Brita. Brita does a crappy job (or did) of filtering solids. Switched to Zero Water filter.

I used to use diluted vinegar to descale my moccamaster and earlier cheaper machines. That was me cheaping out and thinking it was good enough. Then it started getting louder on startup and maybe clunking or thud, not sure. I switched to a proper descaler, durgol, and the extra noises left and 2 yrs later still great. You are likely already using a proper descaler but that’s about the only hope I can think of. Doubt there is much to fix.

My tap water is completely apolitical

For now

Yes, durgol.

I think we are pretty closely aligned in what we are looking for so did you get the upgraded burrs or the standard?

Hi Nathan, I just got the regular ones. I am reasonably picky but happy with what I am getting now.

When I got mine a year or two ago I want to remember that the upgrade cost much less than the $200 it is now, half the cost of the grinder. Even then I got the regular set.
