Lots of great wines so far this year, but a few that stand out in my memory:

2007 Raveneau Montee de Tonnerre
2010 Roumier Chambolle
2010 Cathiard NSG Murgers

1982 PLL (same bottle as Andy, Vince & Yule)
2020 Rousseau CSJ was the best very young Burgundy I’ve had
2000 Chevillon LSG, just in a perfect spot

Surprising; I haven’t opened any 20 Rousseau yet, although I have a decent chunk squirreled away, may need to check in sometime soon.

I don’t drink much Grand Cru Burgundy so it’s not necessarily a high bar. It was really good, though.

Edit: I should say top shelf Burgundy, since it’s not a Grand Cru.

So hard to choose.

Red:
1959 Château Brane-Cantenac. This had no business being so good.

White:
2021 François Raveneau Cru Montée de Tonnerre; started slow, but finished strong
Surprised by how few still whites I opened this year. Maybe that’s just the family’s preference for champagne showing through.

Champagne:
2002 Ruinart Champagne Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs

Laurent-Perrier Champagne Grand Siècle Iteration 14 (1988, 1985, and 1982)

Old white label Krug Grande Cuvée, disgorged sometime between 1982 and 1995, likely based on vintages from the 1970s or early 1980s.,

Discoveries OTY:
NV Goodfellow Blanc de Blancs Durant Vineyard

NV Kobayashi Winery Pinot Noir Nikko Celilo Vineyard (Sparkling)

Surprise OTY:
1972 Château Magdelaine; dismal vintage, outstanding bottle

Co-winner of Discovery, Surprise and COTY:
NV José Michel Champagne Hommage. That one came out of nowhere and really impressed everyone.

I would put the 1988 Rieussec and two other 18988 Sauternes (Suduiraut and Guiraud) we had one night as my discovery of the year. Really showed how well Sauternes taste with age (and not just Yquem) and what a great vintage 1988 was.

happy to see this here has been a wishlist wine for me for a while. Is this still peaking in 750 or do you recommend mag?

I think it’s at peak but not at risk of falling apart anytime soon. My last note mentioned hint of hazelnut and a light oxidative edge, which to me suggests it’s aging well.

They’re planning to step up their sparkling game, so you’ll have more opportunities.

After a recent assembly of the wine gang in Vienna, I have to add three wines to the list:

Raveneau Clos 19 - had this blind, and it was absolutely as stunning as I remember the '20 from earlier in the year. Incredible how well these are showing despite the young age (albeit both had a lot of air before drinking)

Monfortino 1974 and Giacosa Barolo Collina Rionda 1974 - side by side at a vintage Barolo tasting. Both in absolute immaculate condition, and both showing extraordinarily well. Both still loaded with fruit, and the Monfortino with the signature chewy-ness and density, and the Giacosa with an elegance and grace you only get from proper mature wines. Stunning set.
