It’s very representative of my cellar except I don’t have as many white burgs, the 20 BBM was my last high end bottle. I basically drink and cellar red burgs, champagne and Sauternes.
@Nick_Christie has opened a lot of 13 Cristal for us this year (3 bottles? Maybe more?) and it’s consistently shown well.
Wow, 12% (almost) Canadian. High for WOTY lists generally? But consider the source ![]()
And neither is Chardonnay. Hmmmm
(We won’t talk about Ontario Riesling, one of the most overhyped wines IMNSHO.).
Seriously, great list TY.
With 2 months to go, here’s where I’m at:
Red:
1982 PLL (same bottle as Andy)
White:
2014 Ganevat Marnes Bleues (same bottle as Yule)
Sparkling:
Krug 160
2017 Prevost Les Beguines
Sticky:
2001 Suduiraut
Honorable Mentions of all stripes:
1985 Cos D’Estournel (ahead of a lot of great bdx, including 89 PLL, 89/00 Montrose, 98 Conseillante)
2023 Bedrock Dolinsek (first zin I’ve given a 96)
1996 Macle Chateau-Chalon
2015 Bernabeleva Vina Bonita (the closest thing to Rayas outside the Reynaud stable)
DOTYs:
Bodegas Bhilar Rioja Blanco (new school oxidative Rioja, with clear homage paid to the trad. rioja whites)
Gunther Steinmetz pinot noirs
I was very close to putting that 2014 Marnes Bleues on the list, but the Overnoy took the edge
Great to see a few bottles we enjoyed together! ![]()
Thanks for sharing the Ganevat (and many other great wines and experiences) Andy. I very much appreciate it and your company over the past couple of years. I’ve learned a lot from you and the group and I cherish the time we all spent together.
Not many domestic/US wines in here - interesting . . .
Cheers
Ended up with a lighter wine drinking year than last year, but still some good stuff.
WOTYs so far:
Bubbles - 1985 DP Rose
White - 2014 Guffens-Heynen Macon-Pierreclos Tri de Chavigne, 2005 Coche Rougeots
Red - 19?? (I think it was 83? or 79?) Clair Dau Bonnes Mares, 1996 Hubert LIgnier CdlR
Sticky - 2017 Lauer Auslese Auction that I was able to open for Florian at Rieslingfeier. I think something like 100 375s were sold at the auction…
Discovery - Red wines of Vincent Paindavoine.
How about a Best QPR category for us peasants?
we haven’t done it before formally, Mike, perhaps in part because QPR means different things to different people, but I do know people have posted their QPR of the year choice as part of their posting and you are definitely welcome to add that in!
Larry–it’s early yet, only 2 days in
I’m sure some US content will burble through before the end of the year. ![]()
Still 6 weeks to go, but so far, in no particular order (96+ on personal scale):
1995 Domaine Dujac Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes
2000 Noël Verset Cornas
1991 Château Rayas Côtes du Rhône Château de Fonsalette Cuvée Syrah
2014 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières
1982 Château Haut-Brion
2013 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Pignan Reserve
1996 Joseph Drouhin Musigny
1996 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze
2003 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve
1996 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie
1995 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage
1999 Chateau Musar
1991 Joseph Drouhin Griotte-Chambertin
Discovery of the year would probably be Domaine Gauby – had a 2008/2009 Muntada that didn’t quite hit the highs of above, but were just lovely wines.
Maybe instead of best QPR, it should be best sub $100 or sub $50 bottle…I have heard the argument that a $1000 wine that drinks like a $5k wine is good QPR (which while technically true is not really in the spirit of the QPR hunter)
My best sub-$50 wines this year
2023 Metras Beaujolais Premiere Mise ($47)
2022 Cisteller Malvasia de Sitges ($42)
Yep, good way to frame it. I absolutely see the validity in that argument but feel that the other framing is more interesting/helpful for the wider audience
Is it not? Value is value. For example 2021 guyon ech was better than more expensive wines and people thought it was DRC blind, which is 4x the price.
Agree value is value (just like there are times that a -400 favorite may be considered “value” in the sports betting world, or you can get a “deal” on a multi-million dollar house), I just happen to think when discussing QPR its more useful for the masses if the price scale skews lower.
I could be wrong! Just my opinion as a relative novice and someone who won’t be playing in the 1k/bottle category, even if I acknowledge that there can absolutely be “value” wines there.
Barthod Bons Batons is fantastic. That punched well above its weight. People probably tired of hearing me talk about it lol.
Some wines that didn’t make the list, but were quite good (to me anyway):
IMerry Edwards SB is perennially great.
Was also impressed by the Raventos sparking wines - white and rosè this year.
The Berthaut-Gerbet Fixin is also a screaming value. The 2023 is quite good.
The 2022 Chateau de Pez is a great buy if you like Bordeaux.
There’s value and quality to price considerations at all price points. In this forum, discussion of relative value regarding higher priced wines is probably as least as useful.
Agree. I’m far more interested in a $1,000 wine that drinks like a $5,000 wine than a $20 wine that drinks like a $100 wine.
Try guyon ech (2021+)
Oh all right. I do not write as many formal notes as I used to, so this is a combination of CT note scores plus memories from photos that I have. There were a number of outstanding wines that I cannot confirm. IMHSHO, quality in infancy is much better than it was 30 years ago. Whether quality with age will stand up to the past when you think back about the wines of this millennium will have to be decided by the younger members of the group.
2013 SQN Grenache (Male)
2019 Black Sears Cabernet Sauvignon Estate
1947 Climens
2007 Saxum Bone Rock
1995 Grange
2015 MacDonald
2015 Scarecrow
And a lot of other 2015 Napa cabs and Cab blends.
In the QPR Department, 2012 Gisselbrecht Gewurztraminer from a 375. I did not post on it because I wanted to go to the store and buy all that they had before the rest of you gobbled them up, but I have been too busy. It is $4.99 for a 375 and the best QPR since the 2002 Las Rocas.
