How about have CT allow people to give two types of scores to a wine, one for how a wine is now, and one as a prediction for where the taster THINKS the wine will max out at sometime within the drinking window (which would also be a required field in combination with the second score)?

Funny this topic came up, because I was just thinking about something very similar the other day. I was thinking more along the lines of just figuring out the real boundaries of the drinking window (as opposed to whatever has been manually entered) rather than trying to get a full score profile over the life of the wine. Maybe not quite as interesting, but I think it would be simpler and potentially have more participation. My idea was to ignore the score (leave it as is) and add an additional field for “drinking window status” with maybe 3-5 possible values (e.g. “not ready yet,” “ready now” and “too late” or maybe a little more granularity). I think the simpler you make this for people, the more likely people are do it. I personally don’t really ever score wines, but I’d be willing to enter more general data like that.

Interesting. One change in the redesign is that when you are drinking a bottle or adding a tasting note you will be able to see the community drinking window and add/edit your own window. So hopefully this will get a lot more people fine tuning those windows. I do like the idea of a simpler, structured drinkability rating as well and will think about that for the future.

The one thing I really want added to cellartracker is the ability to graph my cellar by region in terms of drinkability ie based on whatever drinkability curve I choose, how many bottles of wine from that region should I have maturing in each year from now on. Would be so useful in spotting whether I will have a gap in eg maturing left bank bordeaux in eg 2015-20 that I should be on the look out for filling. I just have no idea at the moment whether I’m going to look in my cellar in 2013 and suddenly find I have absolutely no mature riesling, or burgundy or whatever.

Dan, I do plan to add this. It may be a little while, as I don’t have this planned to be ready for the initial beta of the redesign (and am still working out my graphing solution).

There are LOTS of cool things I want to do and plan to do once there is enough data. When thinking about algorithms and things to display though it is also easy to design things that will produce pure garbage. So I tend to be a little cautious. We are getting there though. It looks like the site will generate about 410,000 reviews this year, and we are at 1.12 million reviews. Fun!

It would be very cool to have a visual representation (i.e. bar graph) of the distribution of scores for each wine.

I just coded up a little popup that shows the mean, median, standard deviation and a breakdown of scores from < 80, 80-84, 85-89, 90-94, and 95-100. Plus it shows the total count of notes, total count of ratings, and count of distinct people who rated. For the moment is is just textual, but the designer will have a field day coming up with a graphical representation. Anyway, thanks for the nudge, this was on my to-do list, and this thread bumped it to the top of my pile this afternoon. I will forward you an email showing a little snippet screenshot.

Is this enabled on the site or only as something in your test builds?
