WOTN Accolades?

Another vote for voting for WOTN especially with blind tastings. I’ve never felt like it was a contest between the attendees.

In particular it’s great fun when something unexpected happens. Many years ago we had a single blind tasting, maybe 8 bottles (I know Tex, only 8 bottles is an embarrassment) on the Rhone theme. We were convinced that the bottle that was far and away the best was the Beaucastel CdP, 89 I think. We’d all had it before. Instead the rich, meaty, earthy, mushroomy, barnyard blockbuster was a Bonny Doon Cigare Volant. What great fun and what a terrific wine!

I had a feeling that Barolo just needed air. I didn’t mind the brett (never do) but it just seemed tight all around. Glad to hear it came around - although I’m sure there were no takers that A.M.! [drinkers.gif]

I was waiting for that. Don’t worry. I have WOTN for you tomorrow. Blind too. [shock.gif]

I think WOTN is a fun thing, not an ego thing. If someone makes it an ego thing, then that someone will probably not be invited back. All in good fun-- it’s just wine for crying out loud!! Contrary to widely believed lore, gettining WOTN will not increase your penis size!

Aside from my group’s friendly blind Bordeaux challenges where the one who brings the wine with the highest votes gets treated to dinner by the non-winners, and/or, when I am a guest and the host calls for a vote, I never participate in WOTN voting. Honestly, as far as I’m concerned, when it comes to deciding the best wine of an evening, for me, my own opinion is all that matters. Though I do find the reasons for others’ votes interesting at times, when it comes downto it, I only really care what I think in these situations.

Here in Berlin we don´t care about WOTN…most of the times it is quite obvious which wine is WOTN and we don´t need to discuss it anymore. Otherwise you have a horny skin at your palate. Last time we had several Grand Cru Rieslings from the 2001 vintage and clear winner was 01 Dönnhoff “Hermannshöhle” Spätlese trocken. Such young and would easily outperform any white burgundy or austrian Riesling at a blind-tasting.

In addition the palate of the people is such different and I respect that.

I have a little story to tell during my particapation of the GJE from Francois Mauss a few weeks ago in Bordeaux. We had diner at Ch. Malartic-Lagravière and my danish collegue Marie Ahm asked me for my favourite wines of the flight, first I choose 02 Haut-Brion, second 02 Malartic, third 02 Mouton and last 02 Ducru. She had the same combination. In contrast a collegue found the 02 Ducru the best wine of the flight. So you see…

I always say to people "trust your own palate"

Cheers,
Martin

I like the idea. I have partaken in a WOTN many times, but I am from NY, where we even vote on the bread diping options as well as the cleanliness of the Restroom.

Seriously though. I have seen this at almost every offline I have been to, almost.
It seems not to be a ‘win’ thing, but more of a barometer of ‘who likes what’ thing. The win aspect is more of a ‘shits and giggles’ thing when posting the nights results on a forum, much like this one, and is usually done all in good fun.

Now, If I invite you to my home and you bring WOTN, it almost guarantees you will be invited back. newhere

Blind surely doesn’t bother me - Assuming it’s a representative bottle, I know how good my wine is going to be, so I’ll be thrilled for you to bring the WOTN.

You’re bringing Champagne. Starter wines don’t even count in a WOTN vote. neener
