Wines Sampled in Paris

  • 2000 Domaine Marquis d’Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru (4/4/2011)
From the wine list at Taillevent. Medium ruby hue. Nose of beef blood, anise, bing cherry, leather. Palate took about an hour to open, showing moca, iron filings, red plum, currant, and mushroom notes. Low-to-moderate acidity with a fair amount of structure still. Finish was long and marked by hits of raw meat and minerals. Fairly evolved on this showing and absolutely wonderful with beef main course. From a 375. (91 pts.)
  • 2007 Domaine Georges Vernay Condrieu - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu (4/4/2011)
Selected from the wine list at Taillevent. Popped and poured. Clear gold color. Nose was fantastic showing perfumed waves of white lilies, shale, iodine, and pear. Nicely defined on the palate with clear, pure layers of grapefruit, apricot, and flint. Grippy minerals on the long finish. Plenty of acidity and verve. Wonderful with lobster-based bisque. 375 ml. (91 pts.)
  • 2007 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru (4/4/2011)
Selected to accompany turbot at Jules Verne. Popped and poured. Clear white gold hue. Nose of fresh flowers, lemon, pear, apricot. Crisp and acidic on the palate, showing layers of grapefruit, lemon-lime, lychee, and white rocks. Long, lovely finish evoking pears and grippy sharp minerality. Still very young, but quietly impressive on this occasion. Half-bottle. (90 pts.)
  • 2007 Chanson Père et Fils Viré-Clessé - France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Viré-Clessé (4/4/2011)
Purchased to accompany escargots with garlic butter. Chilled then popped and poured. Clear honey color. Nose of florals, shale, sea air, citrus notes. Sharply acidic notes of lime and pear on the palate with some grapefruit as well. Not much oak. Finish marked by citrus and minerals. Paired just fine with the snails, making a good thing better. (87 pts.)
  • 2007 La Pousse d’Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos des 60 Ouvrées - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru (3/31/2011)
Medium ruby purple color. Nose of mulberry, bing cherry, florals, iodine, earth. Voluptuous and velvety on the palate with full, sharp, red fruit. Hints of oak with nervous acidity and fairly submerged tannins to balance things out. Finish layered and wonderfully rendered with pangs of raspberry fruit and iron minerality. Beautiful showing. (93 pts.)
  • 2006 Domaine Raspail-Ay Gigondas - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas (3/31/2011)
Paired with cassoulet. Popped and poured. Medium purple color. Nose of garrigue, pepper, market spices, blackberries, moca. Tangy, grippy red fruits on the palate with lots of exuberance on top of smooth texture. Hints of olive tampenade, earth, strawberry, and leather on the tongue also. Refreshing acidity and dusty tannins. Moderate but grippy finish. Delightful wine in its youth. (90 pts.)

Forgot one:

1999 G. Prieur Hospices de Beaune Beaune 1er Cru Cuvee Brunet.
Popped and poured to accompany baked salmon. Darker ruby hue, almost opaque. Nose of raspberry, bing cherry, sea air, meadow flowers. Powerful on the palate with still-primary black raspberry fruit layered with plum, anise, iron, and earth. Fine-grained structural elements balanced by potent acidity. Very harmonious finish marked by dense dark fruits and minerality. Extremely enjoyable wine quite early in its drinking window but terrific nonetheless.

Doug

Great notes. This sounds fantastic- all of it. I am envious of the Vernay.

Anthony,

The Vernay Condrieu had one of the most memorable noses I’ve sampled in a long time. The wine list at Taillevent is huge and comes in a leather-bound book. Such fun to look through it.

Cheers,
Doug

Is/was it the “regular” Condrieu…Terrasses de l’Empire? or …one the two more expensive ones?

Stuart,

I did not think to look at the label too closely but it was 50 or so Euros off the wine list for a 375 ml bottle. I would guess it is the less expensive version.

Cheers,
Doug

Doug, is there a separate Caves with retail wines? Did you check it out? I’ve had some referrals but haven’t been. My wife and some friends will be nearby next week.

RT

Hi Richard,

There is in fact a separate Caves de Taillevent which appears to be a retail store - it was advertised on a little card on the table when we had lunch. Not sure of its location or how far it is from the restaurant. I wanted to go and look at the selection but I have a feeling I would have found the pricing trop cher as they say.

Cheers,
Doug

Nice notes Doug.
I love that 07 Pousse d’Or 60 Ouvrees too.

Thanks for the notes Doug.

I just came across a bottle of the '00 Ducs… can’t wait to try it. Sounds like it’s drinking well.

Don,

After reading your and others’ notes on the 07 60 Ouvrees (on this BB I believe) I looked for but could not source a bottle in Seattle. Had to go to Paris to get one! Very well worth it.

Chris,

I think the 00 Ducs is ready, although I was surprised by its relatively low acidity and currant notes on the palate. Would be very interested in your TN.

Cheers,
Doug

Doug,

Thanks for the notes. We had the 06 Vernay CdV Condrieu at a N Rhone dinner (Tavola di Perpetua e Felicità - CellarTracker) a few months back. I have to agree that the nose is absolutely ethereal (reminds me of Beaucastel blanc). Condrieu can be a magical thing. Hope you enjoyed your trip.

Faryan

I’ll be sure to put it in cellartracker… although it may be a few months before the right opportunity comes around to drink the wine…

Faryan,

Yes, ethereal is a great descriptor. I need to explore this appellation more. We certainly did enjoy our visit to the City of Lights. Paris in the (almost) spring is amazing.

Chris,

The 2000 vintage is turning out so well for lots of burgundy producers. Hope your bottle shows well.

Cheers,
Doug
