Winehunter Jr. 2007 Keefer Ranch

Since 2007 was my son’s birth year, I emailed Craig a month or so ago about purchasing a few more bottles since I do enjoy their wines. This just makes the decision that much easier and I’ll be ordering another 2 or 3 bottles come 12/31 (gotta stretch the credit card billing out as much as possible).

You know, I’ve never understood the point of birth year wines. I’m not knocking anyone who does it, but I couldn’t do it for multiple reasons. I wouldn’t want to hold on to a wine for that long, and I probably wouldn’t want to share it with a 21 year old who wouldn’t appreciate it. So I guess I’m a selfish wine drinker. hahaha. Now maybe If I was turning 30 and wanted to buy a wine from my birth year, okay, I get that. But I like 'em young.

I gladly ordered another 6 bottles. 20% off plus reasonable shipping cost. Good combo,
and very good wine!!

I have a good amount of birth year wines … and believe me, my daughter won’t be waiting 21 years. But she also have some bottles to enjoy at 30 … hopefully I’ll be there to enjoy them as well. For me it is a very fun thing. It was a birth year wine that took me from being an “enjoyer” to a “geek”. The 68 Unico on my 25th b-day.

Now that makes sense to me. Perhaps I just need to find a good bottle of something from '79 and I’ll be good to go.

Well lots of wonderful Cali 79s. Have you had the Maycamus?

J

btw I figure my daughter will start drinking her birth wines at about 16. I have some sweeter fruitier wines for that. Although already wants to dig into them now and she is only 5.

J

No, can’t say that I have. Not sure what prices are running on decent '79’s, but I find I end up being particularly frugal when it comes to older wines. I don’t want to to spend the coin on a wine that could just be thin and over the hill. But I guess it’s a gamble to take.

yeah it seems like older wines jumped in price … although they seem to have dropped a bit. Can’t say that will match the Unico at 25 years of age. The clock is probably ticking on 79 Cabs.

J

Trust me, these Keefer’s will be gone long before he reaches 21. These are for my wife and I to enjoy. But it just means more to me knowing that anytime I open a 2007 vintage wine, it will remind me of how blessed (or is it cursed?) that I am to have my son. And what better wine to celebrate each of his birthdays as they come each year than a vintage from the year of his birth.

So basically you’re saying that children lead one to drinking? I can believe that! haha

Well, they just lead to drinking more [truce.gif]

I do have about a case of German auslese set aside for him from J.J. Prum and Selbach-Oster and I plan to get him a few of Ponet-Canet, but that is it for the stuff for him. The rest (90%) is for us parents neener

Amen to that. I know I do… now that they’re old enough, they drink with me… using MY wine!!! [swoon.gif]

Drinking what I now truly believe was our final bottle of 07 Keefer Ranch Pinot Noir. The wine showed all the beauty and depth that the 2006s we enjoyed always exhibited. Our previous last bottle of 2007 was a bit wanting, but so was every other Pinot we opened that forgettable, root-ish night. This bottle was just glorious with left-over Flannery Jorge served in tacos, the meal killed! This wine was leather and sous bois without any overt sweet-toothiness, terrific mouthfeel and worthy finish.

Bravo Craig!
