Wine Truisms

In practice, it actually seems to be the case that people prefer the wines they paid the most for if they can see the label.

Definitely not. Most free wine I’ve had has been atrocious.

Wine quality is in direct correlation with how much money a winery has invested in their tasting experience/tasting room.

A lot of good wine comes in second.

(Ie: big tasting, many bottles)

The best wine in the world is the wine you like best.

The vintage currently for sale is the ‘vintage of the century’.

Zinfandel pairs well with spicy food (personally, love both but despise the combination).

The more points the better the wine.

Points are meaningless; wine is an agricultural product and an art form best experienced over time as part of a meal.

Points are dead at retail.

All dessert wines should begin life as white wine.

Love port so have to disagree.

Wine is still a blue collar product made for white collar finances.

Domestic wine is still in its infancy.

Scarcity is a construct…

Buy 87-89 point wines for value.

A large number of people found your comments offensive. That is evidence enough that, whatever your intention, you missed the mark. What’s more likely: we are all humorless narcissistic agitators who imagine offense around every corner? Or that you misjudged your comments?

What I like to drink most is wine that belongs to others.

I thought the following post about it might be easier for you to swallow corked wine was even worse, frankly.

It’s one of the saddest parts of internet discussion. People seem to have lost the ability to say “You know what, you’re right. I didn’t mean to offend anyone, but I clearly did, and I feel bad about that. I’m sorry.”

Instead, any time there’s even a whiff of criticism, people have to fly off into doubling down on why they are blameless, the other person is too sensitive/crazy and should not have been offended in the first place, because it’s not possible that I did anything wrong!"

Well, I’ll take some responsibility here. I was offended and taken aback by the comments, enough so that I thought they needed to be flagged. I’m sorry for setting it off.

You like the wines you like and not the ones you don’t like…

Open your best bottles early in the night.

Make sure you let your wine breathe enough . . . but not too much.
