Wine Tariffs discussion - NO POLITICS

I wonder what the definition of this is. Eg if I rebottle and relabel Latour in the UK does it still count?

I know with cars it gets very specific, eg 65% of he parts have to be sourced within EU to count as EU produced etc etc.

The language they are using is based on origin, so relabeling or routing thru the UK doesn’t help.

But Ive made a new product based on raw materials

Ah yes the subject of “substantial transformation.” So if wood was listed for tariffs but barrels were not then the transformation from wooden planks to finished barrels would be a substantial transformation.

Yes, but then we wouldn’t buy it.

30% margin over a 200% tariff?

We won’t buy that either.

On the issue of retailers suspending futures offerings, I just got a “last call for 2023 Bordeaux futures” e-mail from Total Wine. So for whatever that might be worth, there’s at least one major retailer out there still selling Bordeaux for 2026 delivery.

Hmm back to the drawing board.

Qq how many people here would buy Latour 16 but have been put off by tariffs?

Hearing the planned release volume has been reduced

The example I was given was a marble table.

So, for example, if you purchased a marble table (with a steel base) from Cassina in Italy, you would need to trace the origin of the steel back to the origin factory, as well as the marble. If the steel originated in China, then there would be additional tariffs applied to the value of the steel - but how do you determine the value of the steel base in a marble table? And if the marble is from Brazil, then that might be exempt from additional EU tariffs. And what is the value of the marble? The whole thing is whacked.

The above is how I interpreted the conversation, FYI.

There valuation methods as part of the Customs regulations.

Total Wine explicitly states you can cancel the order due to Tariff rates though.

Anecdotal evidence, ie, evidence from only me myself:
I was a heavily Eurocentric importer for 37 years. I have a very long list of domestic producers whose wines I would love to represent. Obviously many may already have distributors, others may be too small, my business would have to pivot to brokerage, working on commission; impossible to impose an importer’s margin on domestic wine, but if I wasn’t retired and tariffs were imposed tomorrow, I think I could build a portfolio; for at least New England, probably the Northeast; the whole country or even the country east of the Rockies would be a more daunting task.

Broader point you are making is still valid that many people will hold back.

I am still going to buy it but that’s because I have an existing storage at BBr anyway and wouldn’t have brought it over for multiple years anyway.
