Isn’t the whole point of tariffs to protect domestic production by raising prices on imports and making domestic goods more attractive? So how about if everyone cooperate now and support domestic wineries instead of buying foreign wines? Just a thought. And no, Champagne does not count.
Chris - Patrick Cappiello has hijacked your account.
I had never heard of him. I’m afraid the joke is lost on me.
Italy was not affected as far as I recall, so I’m hoping the same will be the case should it happen again.
I’ll probably buy a lot of wine before the election just ‘cause that’s what I do.
If it turns out someone wins and imposes tariffs and that actually makes the price of wine go up, then I’ll take my (wholly undeserved but very, very smug) victory lap at that time.
“You really should have kept abreast of the political forecasting and locked in that case of Huet back at pre-tariff prices. That’s an expensive lesson.”
The stated plan is “all” imports to the USA for this time.
I do not recall Biden getting Congressional approval when he slapped a 100% duty on Chinese electric vehicles
Are we really going to re-do the entire “how are tariffs imposed” discussion we had in 2019? Nothing has changed. The executive branch has the authority to impose tariffs.
Yes, since the quoted portion was incorrect and needed to be corrected. Not everyone is going to go back to the previous thread to read your words of wisdom.
I wouldn’t think 10% would matter. Even if the full 10% was passed through I don’t think it’s enough to stop the low end buyer paying an extra buck or so. It’s also not enough to get those buyers to shift to U.S. wines. So my $15 cdr cost $16.50, I’m still about $10 cheaper than most domestic alternatives.
The big boys, 1st growths ect can afford to eat the 10% if they need/want to sell wine without me feeling sorry for them. The importers and retailers who just mark up ( burgundy ect) due to demand should also eat a small percent without starving.
As I’m thinking it through, no I don’t think it should push me to buy. Maybe a bucket of powdered wine.
OK. People can keep saying incorrect things, and I will correct them. No free passes for things already corrected in this thread.
It’s going to hurt some people we know here. Think about Nola. Having to deal with a 10% hit on everything she brings in, and then get lambasted by people for raising prices…
There’s usually also a tit for tat with these types of things.
The Chinese will pay for it.
Mexico will. After it pays for the ‘wall’.
I wish I could find any of that funny, but it just falls flat when things regular people use every day will suddenly increase by 10%. Wine doesn’t matter in that context.
Are we going to see new tariffs on European wines next year?
Probably.
That will be the least important category of goods that get hit.
Yeah, but this is a wine board.
Doesn’t change the fact that it’s a fringe issue in the grand scheme of tariffs. Drink more U.S. wine.
