i’m relatively new in my wine journey and i’m looking to start a collection. my townhome has a built-in wine fridge, but only holds about 60 bottles.
looking to increase from there. the caveat is that i’m not sure how much longer we’ll be staying in this area. currently in DC, considering a move to chicago or west coast?
if you were looking to start building a collection, how would you go about that? buy a real wine fridge? rent a locker? wait to start?
There’s great storage options in DC. That’s certainly the easiest way to start. But getting a decent sized wine fridge that holds a couple hundred bottles is another option. It really depends on your budget and how much wine you are going to be buying per month (or quarter or year or however you want to quantify it).
If you plan to move, choose a storage facility that has locations in the areas you are considering moving to and that will transport the wines to the new location. I wouldn’t buy a real wine fridge until after the move. They are so heavy and a real pain to move, as bad as a piano. We are planning a move and I’m giving mine to my nephew rather than moving it.
Given what you just posted I would wait learn how to control your 60 bottle wine fridge and wait till you make a decision as to your real location.
Get your moved figured out first. Moving wine and a wine fridge is no fun. Plan your buying strategy so when you are settled you can pull the trigger. Your new home may have a basement or sublevel which may not require a fridge. Some areas may not have offsite storage, it may be too pricey or far away. Figure out how much wine you want to have on hand as well. Diversify your collection as well but that’s another conversation.

I had a feeling this would be the answer.
we just signed in DC for another 2y lease. there’s a maybe 15% chance we end up staying here long term, which is why i kinda want to start collecting and just deal with the headache if we end up moving.
based on our space right now, it seems like starting with a wine locker might be the best idea.
