wine storage -Faux Pas

I was invited over to one of my son’s classmates house yesterday for a toddler New Years Eve celebration of chili, chicken nuggets etc. Now the father of my son’s playdate works in investment banking and from the size of the house he does modestly well. We got on the conversation of wine since we brought over NV Clicquot and a 2007 Steltzner Cabernet. He had stated that his boss, always gives him great bottles of wine that he was going to open for a special ocasion but never did.

This wine that he spoke of was stored in a rack on top of the fridge. Well, all I can say is that the Sassicaia, Talenti Bdm and Ornellia were impressive but I almost fainted when I found the 2001 Lafite and 2003 Mouton [wow.gif] [wow.gif] [wow.gif] [wow.gif]

I promptly brought the bottles to his basement, and since they have been in a moderately 74 F kitchen for about 5-6 years I offered what any good wine person would do. I offered to cook him and his wife a great meal if we could open it up and try it.

Happy New Year!

What is it with the top of the fridge? I’ve seen this more times than I can count.

It’s an appearance thing I think…for non geeks.

I continue to be amazed at how many people think they need to “store” their wine on the top of heir fridge. While looking to buy a house when I moved to Texas, I saw many places with good wine stored on the fridge. But, one house had all first growths up there. Made me want to cry.

Well-intentioned, gently presented truth to benefit the receiver is never wrong.

The vibrations and additional varying heat really help preserve the wine

That’s reminds of a new business partner I was working with. I am at a BBQ at his home for the first time, and when he learns how into wine I am, he then shows me wine that has been in his fridge for “about a year” an was wondering how much longer he could keep It before it went bad.
