Maybe they were thinking of some Berserkers who LOOK for wines with lower scores because they think that fact will make it more enticing then those boring 98 pointers . . .

Actually, might go look at the note. If it references medium body and a red fruit profile it might be worth buying a bottle to try out!

Freemark Abbey

Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Cabernet Bosché 2022

91 Points$225

Red - United States - California

Tasting Note

Leads with a burst of open-knit but persistent red and black cherry compote flavors. Modestly juicy energy keeps the fruit going, while subtle notes of cedar, iris and iron peek through the understated finish. Drink now through 2035. 1,479 cases made. --JM

Thanks for the reminder. My best friend picked up three for me there last week and I need to Venmo him.

So let’s get this right. They choose one Napa Cabernet Sauvignon from the 2022 vintage, and they choose this. Not a lot else to say.

Congratulations to @Morgan_Twain-Peterson @Chris_Cottrell @Cody_Rasmussen and the entire Bedrock team for #12.

Kinda funny, I did a tasting at Barnett last January. The only wine I really liked and then ended up buying was the 22 Merlot.

Advertising dollars gets you a spot in the top 100

Do you really think that’s the way that WS works? And I’m being serious - as an ITB, curious to hear your thoughts . . .

It isn’t. It’s just a de rigueure thing to say in these threads every year. Along with “oh noes a wine I like was #9 and now I’ll never be able to afford it again!!”

Likely Ian was just having fun with it.

Exactly.

We honestly don’t know. To Chris’ point, it’s something everyone says every year.

Caterwaul is in there. As far as I know, there’s not big marketing dollars there. Same with Bedrock.

Plenty of names to point to that aren’t backed by big bucks.

Gotcha - the challenge with the written word is you can’t tell ‘sarcasm’ as easily as one may prefer

Cheers

I did the smiley face, I figured that was enough.

We need a standard sarcasm emoji. That will help.

Went into a local shop this weekend, and was looking for every day drinkers (testing a few things for the holidays for family).

Went to check out, and noticed a stack of wine with a really familiar label. Columbia Crest Reserve Cabernet! And it was on close out for really cheap. I recalled getting some newspaper ad that they took out around the time of the WS WOTY award, and it said something about “The most important branding ad in wine history” or something dumb and chest beating like that.

15 years later, no one cares.

2025 is out. Oregon pinots are popular. Good range in price for a top 100 list, imho.
