My wife and I are dining at Acorn in Vancouver in a couple weeks, and their list is very heavily focused on British Columbia wines. We’d probably favor a sparkling or white but a light red isn’t out of the question. We have fairly catholic tastes and are more focused on balance than on ripeness or sweet vs. savory profile per se. (We happily drink Baudry Chinon, we happily drink Ridge Zins, etc.) Anyone on the board have knowledge of the BC wine scene and see any favorites on here?
What are “catholic tastes”?
Small c usage: wide-ranging, all-embracing, universal. (That is why the Catholic big C church calls itself that. Or maybe vice versa. But in any case the small-c usage.)
Here meaning, not particularly wedded to a particular style of wine, generalists rather than specialists, etc.
Ahhh learn something new everyday!
I would order the Chantereve red. I’ve never heard of a Paris hospital bottling so I would get it out of curiosity.
+1 for Chantereves Red or white.
For whites, I had the Clos du Tue Boeuf recently and that was lovely. definitely in a more balanced simple style.
If you’re feeling adventurous then the Matassa Cuvee Marguerite has a touch of maceration and is just a flower field in a bottle.
Canadian - not from BC - here to offer Bella, Poppyshake, and Scout all as great representatives of BC Wine in approachable styles. Bella’s Reserve bottling always has nice leesy character. Scout is a good dry Riesling producer.
Thank you, Steven! Appreciate the intel, feel like I should go with a BC wine just to have the experience.
Go for the BC options - these are well chosen from small producers - Keenan, Bella, Anthony Buchanan all excellent - it’s a really good small list, focusing on low-intervention producers
When we went to Acorn a couple of years ago we had a Texier and a Foradori wine the whole experience was great.
I am fairly familiar with the wines of BC but have not had any of the ones listed here. I am sure they will be good. It is a very cerebral place. They will have put some thought into their choices.
Thanks, David and Jamie!
Nice to be mentioned in the same post as Jamie. Trust him.
