I have so far avoided any certifications. 3-4ish years back I started to dive a bit deeper into wine and I wanted to learn more. Since then I have read a handful of books that I found valuable, and that has allowed me to be specific/ intentional regarding what I am learning about. The wine world is infinite in a practical sense, so that has been important to me. IMO the best way to learn wine is to experience it and that is obviously costly.
Each year have been able to try 200+ different wines that I have never tried before (not including tastings where I only get a few sips and do not get to explore the wine over several hours). Tastings still seem very useful, but I really think the wine evolution needs to be experienced over hours. Doing SBS tastings is really valuable. Especially if you read the tech sheets, tasting notes, and or information about the producer each time you try a wine. I have been close several times to signing up for WSET, but it is fairly expensive and you could buy a great deal of wine at that price and set up SBS tastings. I think it is near $2000 at this point which would be 40 x $50 bottles and maybe 8 tastings with 5 bottles, or 20 with 2, that can be honed into much more specific and desired knowledge.
I may still consider some cert one day, but it is still quite pricey to justify without needing the cert imo.
