So ten years ago when I got really into this wine thing, it was all about getting on the cult mailing lists. SE, Harlan, Abreu, etc. Then I had two kids and realized that spending $200 - $750 for a bottle of wine no longer appealed to me. It got to the point where it would be Thursday night and we would order pizza and I’d go down to the basement and couldn’t find a wine under $50.00.
So my latest adventure has been finding great wines under $20 and keeping the cults sleeping in my wine fridge for special occasions.
About a year ago I discovered a great wine by Joel Gott, Sarah Gott’s brother. They make a Cab, a Pinot, and a Malbec. At Binny’s, the local wine discount store, it sells for $12.99. Great deal for a really good everyday wine.
Then the grocery store by our house started carrying it. It was on the shelf for $14.99. If I ran out and didn’t want to drive all the way to Binny’s, I’d grab a bottle or two.
Well, the wine guy at the grocery store struck a deal with his distributor and is running a sale on the Malbec and Cabernet…for $4.99 a bottle! And if you buy a case, you get a 10% discount. So $4.49 for a $15 bottle of wine.
I’m not a big fan of any of the Joel Gott stuff, and have tasted through most of their lineup. But at $5 a bottle I’d definitely be in for a case or two.
Interesting to be named “God” (in German). Maybe they should name their next son Jesus.
I haven’t had the benefit of trying it yet, but this seems like it’s going to be pretty hard to beat in the “someone basically giving away a pretty good wine” category. $3.99/bottle for a WS 89 point Douro red that sells for $16+ everywhere else. Plus no sales tax since it’s out of state.
I’ve got to get off this thread now and stay off – that avatar is freaking me out.
