just a heads up for those in the Twin Cities that Costco (at least the Maplewood location) has 2009 Dominus on closeout for $100. The Maple Grove Costco also has 2009 Merus for $100.
You must have missed the big run on 2005’s right after they were released and Costco was selling at their normal margins. It was a feeding frenzy with new finds every day around the country.
No, you have to just go to the right Costco at the right time to find things like this.
They do have an unpredictable set of very high-end wines there at times. Last time I went to the Irvine Costco, they had Shafer Hillside Select, a bunch of RP 100 point 2010 Bordeaux, and other things like that in a glass case. I actually bought a couple 2011 Pontet Canet at Costco recently.
But the deals aren’t usually that much, if anything, on these higher end wines. They usually aren’t cheaper than the lower WSPro prices out there. I think there was a time when the discounting on premium wines at Costco was steeper, but that hasn’t seemed to be the case for many years now.
The Costco in my local area sucks; they have Dom on occasion. When I was in San Fran last year I stopped by the Costco in the city and they had some pretty cool wines but the prices weren’t that great. Their glass case had some 1st Growth, etc.
