The recent thread on John Gilman’s “Roadkill” prompted me to take a look at that linked issue of his publication to see what his writing style was like. Not bad, and I liked some of the detail/background info that he included in several of the articles. That said, in all likelihood I’m not going to subscribe, and the primary reason is what I would refer to as “wine info overload”. I already have underutilized subscriptions to EBob, Tanzer & Burghound, and at some point in time it just gets to be too much.
At any rate, it got me to thinking about what folks think is the “norm” for these types of publications - i.e., how many wine publications do you subscribe to? Similarly, how many Wine Boards do you actively participate in? I know that I see a lot of the same discussions in Wine Talk on both EBob and this site, so clearly there is a lot of overlap to the respective memberships of these sites. Do folks also post these threads to Boards like the Wine Spectator or West Coast Wine Network (assuming it still exists) also?
I let my Wine Spectator subscription lapse in around '01 and the WA a year or so later. No other subscriptions for me.
Wine boards - this one and ebob.
I’ve never subscribed to any wine magazine myself. I was given a couple of annual subscriptions to WS around 6 or 7 years ago as gifts, but I didn’t read them.
I participate on 3 wine boards: this one, WCWN (since January of 2005) and a local one (since July 2008).
Decanter magazine is not what it used to be, and I never really took to the Wine Spectator.
I’m against the Wine Advocate for, shall we say, philosophical reasons.
That leaves a number of Internet sites, where input by dedicated geeks can frequently be more useful than appraisals by the “experts”.
I’ve just discovered this site, which I understand was born when people shook off the shackles of the Parker board.
I also quite enjoy Tom Cannavan’s UK wine pages and the Bordeaux Wine Enthusaists forum.
Unless I am mistaken, there exists no such forum dedicated to the wines of Burgundy.

I used to subscribe to Bob’s site and now I just post again like before. I started a WS subscription this past year and have been somewhat happy with it, I also contribute to Snooth. No other places currently, although winetwits should be launched shortly and I will participate with that.
I like WA. It is good leisurely reading for me. It am halfway thru last issue’s report on Languedoc. I buy Decnater when I travel for reading at the airport. 2 or 3 a year is fine. I often get WS for some odd reason (air miles from a seldom used airline, etc.). I like reading books and magazines about many topics including wines.
As for BB’s, this and Ebob and on occassion WS and Disordder. Ws gets boring though and Disorder is a bit too “hipster” at times. There are people on all BB’s whose opinions I really value though.
I no longer subscribe to WA, but do to WS. It’s fun as there are some good articles in there. As for wine boards, I mostly only participate here. I used to partcipate on WLTV and Ebob, but now post at both places rarely. Just not enough time to post at more than one board for me.
It’s my job to read the mags, so I get caught up with all of them. WS, WA, IWC, WE, W&S, Burghound, Decanter, Connoisseur’s Guide to Cali Wine, The Wine News. Gilman is next to add on the list too. Thank god I don’t pay for any of them!
