Will you switch to US wine if tariffs take place?

I am in a similar position to other posters in having more than enough wine for my life; however, if I were at an earlier point in my life and wine buying journey, the tariffs would very likely induce me to switch purchases. I would very likely suspend purchases of all tariffed wines and US wines would fill in at least some of the gap, though probably not 100%.

As it is, I have up til now done a little backfill purchasing of European wines which have now come to a complete halt. Purchases of US wine are likely to be the same as before.

It would not change my purchasing. I am buying less, and there are two California producers and one from Oregon.

If I were younger, and did not have enough wine, it would certainly push me into experimenting more.

I’m boycotting American wines made by Europeans. Playing both sides. :upside_down_face:

I’ll buy even less in the US than the already dwindling purchases I currently make. Will keep buying overseas and store it over there until it makes sense to import. I have about 400 bottles across the pond ready to ship right now and will see next week if I get a window to ship them or just let them be until later.

Everyone is assuming it’s temporary. And I certainly hope so. I don’t need to buy wine any time soon and would certainly resent being pushed in that direction by the government. So I would wait. But the duration of that waiting period probably varies across Berserkers, and mine is certainly much shorter than most of you.

If indeed these crazy tariffs became a new permanent reality, then I might switch to more US wine purchasing. Although hopefully that doesn’t happen…

I’d love to work out how I can snaffle the excess inventory they’ve pulled from the shelves in Ontario!

Snaffle?

Not likely. Worry a bit about Champagne because that is the one that I tend to buy and drink versus cellar.

Except it might last 11 years… :grimacing:

There is so much inventory floating around, and when you add auctions for consigned cellars, who needs to buy current release stuff anyways? I could so easily (but definitely shouldn’t) chew up the next 4 years on auction sites without even taking the time to look up and notice any tariffs

By the standards of this board, I’m still new to wine. I drank and cellared mostly European wine until 2017, when the airbus tariffs hit. Since then, I have been intentionally seeking out US producers. Berserker Day has helped a lot with that project.

If another round of tariffs hit wine, I’ll shift to US producers. I have no idea how long they might last and I don’t have a cellar for the apocalypse.

tariffs are not going to inspire me to buy wines I currently am not interested in buying.

I agree. I have plenty of wine. I only buy wines that excite me at a price I find acceptable. If I buy California wines, it is because they excite me.

Don’t worry. If foreign wine prices go up, California producers will raise prices rather than gain market share.

Will definitely be looking out for and tasting US producers I haven’t tried yet. Although I love old world wines I am somewhat excited for the possibility of these tariffs, they will go away eventually so I’m not worrried long term. But It will be like a little Covid period of exploration

I think at this moment California producers would be happy to just sell wine, period.

Obviously a lot still unknown but for me personally I’ll try to ride it out with what I have on hand and supplement where needed with what is already stateside. In most cases I don’t think that will be an issue (Italian, Bdx) but if this lasts the full term it could be problematic for my stock of N Rhone and Champagne. In that case, I could see myself buying more domestic like Oregon sparkling or Cali Syrah like Tidings, Desire Lines, Ramey.

A very easy “no” from my position sat in the UK.

I’d like to keep purchasing US wine here in the UK. There’s a number of Oregon producers imported here that I adore. Right now it still seems like the UK importer is still hoping to bring them in.

Won’t switch. I have plenty of wine, and have been steadily reducing my ludicrous over-buying the last few years. Tariffs will encourage me to continue that process.
