Whole Foods Wine Dept - did something just change (for the worse) ?

I understood 19% off. :man_shrugging:t2:

May be immaterial, because as I was looking to confirm I noted that this doesn’t apply to alcohol. The wording is confusing, but what I have seen on my receipts is a bonus 10% of the sale savings . . . so if you buy a steak that’s on sale for $4 less per pound, you get it for $4.40 less per pound, not an additional 10% off the regular price, or the sale price. Probably would be more accurate to say “an additional 10% of the discount”

I think maybe it was Colleen? But I’m not certain. She was there while I was but I rarely spoke much with her (and it was maybe 15-16 years ago).

The only thing I remember about her is that she wasn’t the easiest to work with.

It’s really too bad it’s changed. I hear Portland overall has changed considerably since I moved away in 2008. I haven’t been back since, but plan to bring my wife and son at some point in the next year or two.

I worked in the Specialty Dept. at Whole Foods for a couple years (2015-2017) and At the time of my departure the company as a whole was talking more and more about making close to 100% of a store’s selection down to the national and regional buyer’s decision. This would make it so the store level buyer has no power or the position entirely goes away. Most of the buying was also to be moved to a robot’s algorithm for par levels and going off what sells and at what rate. Certain stores were also in the process of making a “dairy buyer” position in order to remove “cheese buyer”. Our wine buyer was great, but he only had say in 10~20% of the selection. Prior to me even joining they had just removed the beer buyer position to merge it with the Wine buying position.

I stopped by the lone WF wine store in NY state, on Columbus Ave. at 98th on the Upper West Side, recently. (You’re only allowed one license in NY state.) The selection was still pretty good – quite solid in the Italians and a number of good German producers you don’t see many places.

Perhaps they’re catering more to individual markets?

In my region, all these prices are relatively plump too. So one gets the ambiance & selection of a discount warehouse with boutique pricing…

Although to be fair if one really prowls the aisles, there seem to be a few items of interest, that I never recall before e.g. there was a Pomerol and Gevrey Chambertin in their French section.
