jus’ wonderin’ if anyone here IS of such belief.
I know that both Abood and Liotta are not fans of this vintage.
I have enough 03 Clos des Papes in my cellar to afford not to care about the next over-hyped vintage in CdP ![]()
I think you can include 2007 in the best vintages. There are many great wines. You just need to be selective if you are like me and not fond of the very ripe, alcoholic style.
I certainly am.
I think it is one in a string of very good to great vintages. It deserves to be in a class with 98, 01, and 05 and slightly ahead of 99, 00, 03, 04 and 06 for a generalization. Top down quality at all price levels. I would not go further than that, but that is enough to get me to buy a bottle or two.
The prices are obscene, the supply seems to be nil and anything I have had rated over say 96 hasn’t been for me.
I have found tremendous value on the low end though, and things like Vacqueyras seems to really over deliver for it’s zip code.
I would draw strong correlation to 2005 Bordeaux on this one. If you didn’t buy early, don’t buy at all.
Seems to be a good vintage. Only time will tell. Most wines are far too young to draw any final conclusions.
Is this Californiated style of over ripe, h.a. wine now going to be the new CdP style?
Supply has been silly. Our largest area LWS sold out of Chat Beaucastel within hours of putting in on the shelf. Word got out, and bam it was gone. My LWS only got four cases of allocation. The wine mgr had to stop a sale. A customer came in and took all four cases. After an aggressive dispute, he allowed the customer to buy 3 of the cases. The mgr called me and told me that if I wanted 1 bottle he would hold it for me! Many of the stores regular customers was p—ed that got only got one bottle if any. The young stocking clerk thought he was doing a good thing cleaning out inventory! We were additionally allocated 2 bottles of VT “La Crau”. I look at the case count on production of these wines and wonder where it’s all going. The WA/WS hype has bought out everyone it appears, regardless of pricing. I was in a different store last week that had VT La Crau priced at $105/btl. The wine mgr said “that’s the price, I’m not having any problem selling my allocation. Those four bottles are all I have left”. I passed.
I think this is a year not to buy the luxury cuvees. The pricing on the lower ones is more in line. Moreover, look for good pricing in two years on these lowly 93 point wines when the 09’s (another vintage of the century) are released.
I agree on the Vacqueyras, some Gigondas and lots of Cotes du Rhones.
Depends on how you classify a great vintage.
What is special to me about the 07s is the bottom end has a seemingly endless supply of fantastic wines at dirt cheap prices. The only thing other recent viticultural vintage that comes to my mind, in this regard, is 05 BDX and I find the 07 Rhone, if you enjoy that style, to be better equipped at that end.
Regarding the top end wines, I found them to have phenomenal purity. Will they be ageworthy and develop wonderful complexity while retaining balance? I defer to the experts, one of which has already posted on this thread.
I’ve had good luck with the 07CDRs I’ve bought and think they will drink well over the next few years while the CNDPs age. I’ve avoided the high end hype and selectively bought a variety of CNDPs for $35 or less. I doubt I will buy much more of this vintage.
Once PC delivers I’ll let you know. ![]()
I thought I had bought VT from a local shop on futures, but discovered last week that I was mistaken. So, my main task on Friday was to see if I could still pick up a case. Fortunately, I discovered the mistake in time and the shop has a special on 6+ bottle purchase of 2007 CdP, so managed to get it at $59.50. I’m not buying many other 2007 CdP’s, but may pick up some depending on prices and whether I have opportunity to taste.

Best,

I think Paul and Loren have hit in on the head…I have never been a fan of the “super cuvees”, too ripe and alcoholic for my taste. Therefore, after visiting in October, I am convinced of the overall quality of the vintage…especially for the more traditional producers. In addition, we drank many wonderful Vacqueras, Lirac, Sablet, Gigondas, and delicious Cotes du Rhone. The variety and quality of tiny labels you never see stateside is mind boggling!!
Cheers!

What if you NEVER like the super cuvees though?
We opened a 3L of Hommage a Jacques Perrin 2000 in the store over the weekend, and people fussed, and ooh’ed and aah’ed over this wine, and I thought it tasted like roasted plums soaked in beef blood. I’ll eat some weird stuff, but this really crossed a line.
Deus Ex Machina is a nice wine, but $400 a bottle??? Maybe $55 or $60, but triple digits?
I failed to load my personal stock with the really well priced stuff, and now that the 08s have surfaced, little for me left to drink. [suicide.gif]

If this is how they are going, I’m going to be sad. I haven’t tasted much of '07 but what I have tasted did seem very over ripe.
I drank an 05 Clos des Pape on Saturday night and it reminded me how wonderful 05 is, it will be interesting to watch them age but its gonna be hard to beat the 2005’s in some cases. I tasted a number of 2007 from barrel and the certainly have the stuffing.

There were some very good wines made in 2007.
I could say the same thing about 2006 however.

And hopefully the '06’s will be priced well as a result of the ratings of the '07!
I think so, but my range of interest is really narrow with CDPs
I buy Beaucastel in great vintages and will buy in 2007 but time will only tell whether it will equal or surpass the 1990 or 2001 Beau
The CDRs in 2007 are pretty special for the money and I went deep. Hopefully, I will keep my hands off some to see if they improve with age.
