Whites and sparklers from Key West

  • 2008 Ridge Chardonnay Santa Cruz Mountains - USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Santa Cruz Mountains (2/22/2012)
Wow, what an interesting wine. My first Ridge chard. Nice nose of florals and minerals. Incredible acidity for a chard, which it a bit shocking at first sip, and then becomes a wonderful treat at it sinks in. Lots of complexity going on, with wet stone, hay, apple, pear, peach. Clearly built for the long haul, but feel free to back up the truck.
  • 2010 Bevan Cellars Sauvignon Blanc Monica’s Cuvee Kick Ranch - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (2/22/2012)
Very light is color, but a fragrant nose of grass, stone, grapefruit, and a touch of honey. Good depth of flavors with more minerality, grapefruit, and a tiny honey component. My benchmark for CA SB is Merry Edwards, and this was in a similar style. A nicely balanced wine, I would gladly buy again.
  • 2010 Dönnhoff Riesling Estate - Germany, Nahe (2/22/2012)
Nice light floral nose with some peach scent. Good balance of fruit and acid, with more peach on the palate, along with green apple and pear. Light and refreshing, would make a good summer sipper.
  • NV Louis Roederer Champagne Brut Premier - France, Champagne (2/22/2012)
Light yellow/beige color with a good mousse. Strong acidity in this one. On the palate I get apple, pear, chalk and lemon, with a hint of bread. A nice wine, not as good as the Rose Brut, but very enjoyable.
  • NV Perrier-Jouët Champagne Grand Brut - France, Champagne (2/22/2012)
Drank a 750 and 2 175’s last week. The 750 was nice but very primary with green apples, pear, minerals, and strong acidity. The 175’s had these components, along with tremendous half-baked bread and nutty flavors that were simply wonderful. Is it because smaller bottles age quicker? Not sure, but they were a joy.
  • 2008 De Chanceny Vouvray Brut Excellence - France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray (2/7/2012)
Nothing special, a mildly unpleasant bite on the finish. (not from KW but forgot to post it)
