Wait. I thought we were doing #Scheurebestudy?
see you soon!
A student that is coming all the way from the U.K. is bringing a Keller Scheurebe!
Another lovely bottle of Cuvée Christina. Flavor intensity on a feather light frame; fruit on the green side of the spectrum. Impeccably balanced, silky, and refreshing. I consumed this entire bottle alone at an irresponsible rate of speed. This is quickly becoming a favorite.
We had a lot of Riesling Sunday in Brooklyn #rieslingstudy. Organized by @Robert_Dentice.
Where are the notes?
First time caller…long time listener (For Boston people they’ll get the sports talk radio joke).
Really into Riesling - but so many different producers. What do folks think of Trimbach? I had some of their entry Gewurtz (and yes I know it’s not Riesling) and thought it was awesome. But they have so many different options and not sure what’s best to first sample.
What do folks think is the best “entry” level Kabinett? Spatlese? Frankly the Donnhoff entry level and Keller entry level stuff doesnt do it for me like JJ Prums/Lauer which just have so much more going on.
Check out Max Ferd Richter or Selbach Oster.
Dig deep into Selbach-Oster. If you can find some Loewen that would be good as well.
On Trimbach, if you want drier wines, their range is outstanding.
Sounds like you and me have similar preferences. For the white wines in our cellar 98.6% are Riesling and of that portion 4 bottles aren’t from the Mosel. I also enjoy Gewurtz every now and then. There’s a really small producer in Mehring (only available at the winery) that produces an Auslese Gewurtz that shows a little Botritis and it has been aging perfectly unfortunately I only have 1 bottle left. One of my favorite producers which doesn’t get a lot of attention is Dr Hermann. We’ve been buying their wines for the last 20+ years and they are only getting better. MFR has been another one we enjoy quite a bit. Vollenweider is another top notch producer.
This is a 2014 Red Newt Tango Oaks dry Riesling and I’m very impressed. I have a decent amount of experience with FLX Riesling but most of that experience is with younger wines. At 11 years of age this is still super youthful and it’s a serious shame that it’s my only bottle!
Reminds me of a kabinett trocken. Mineral and savory with lovely lemon and ginger flavors. Maybe some kitchen herbs too. Is there just a hint of petrol developing or am I imagining it? Great acidity. Would be very interested to see where this goes in another 5-10 years.
@Kelby_James_Russell bravo! Will need to come visit you at Apollo’s Praise when I’m back up in the area around mid-August!
I’m late to the party, but this is very nice stuff. @Robert_Dentice was kind enough to bring a bottle to an event earlier in the week, but it was difficult to get a good read on it. This bottle at home was absolutely gorgeous, my kind of riesling. Layered textured and savory but fresh focused and juicy. The complete package.
2007 Maximin Grunhauser Abtsberg Kabinett. Fully mature with beautiful flavors and a petrol note added to the fruit. Probably not the finish of a great wine but really intriguing flavors. I would say drink them if you got them - don’t see this getting better.
His wines are sublime!!
Thank you for the kind words! That was (and remains) a lovely Dry Riesling from a really lovely vintage for age worthy wines. They weren’t as showy when young, as they were just a bundle of nerves, but some bottle age has started to let it unfurl. I’d agree, however, last time I had a bottle it was still a baby.
Will be pleased to see you this summer, please do come up and reach out! And in a great coincidence of cosmic timing, the 2024s you’ll be able to try around the region are the closest we’ve had to 2014 since then. We’ve had great vintages in-between, but it is rare to get that particular combination of ripeness plus acid.
Yep, the Fauth family knows a thing or two when it comes to the KIRCHSPIEL vineyard.
Classic cool-climate vintage, racy&pure and with huge mineral drive. By the colour and after the first sip you think this 2017 Kirchspiel is 2 years old, clearly fresh as a daisy. In addition quite spicy and with a playful elegance which is classic Kirchspiel. No doubt, here we have GG-level.
Chapeau Florian, there is nothing to hide from the Kirchspiel by your brother-in-law.

P.S. 2023 is still available in Germany.
Thanks for posting this one Jurgen, the few wines I have had from this winery has been excellent!
Yep Mikael, the Morstein Alte Reben is also a great Riesling by Florian Fauth.
Finally opened a Donnhoff Oberhauser after reading some rav reviews. NOW I’m singing its praises! Mostly had been a Hermannshoe vineyard buyer the past few years. CT note said it best, “an explosion of peaches and pineapple.” This was a 2020.
The 2020 Brucke Spätlese is one of my favorite Donnhoff wines of the last ten years.
