Which Rhône are you drinking?

On the heels of BobH3’s recent post (Domaine de Ferrand La Garriguette - #5 by BobH3), we decided to open our last bottle of the 2010 Ferrand CdP this evening.

2010 was a much-touted CdP vintage upon release. Yet, frustratingly, the wines have required a great deal of patience as their tannin profile has tended to overwhelm the generous amount of fruit hidden somewhere beneath. The 2010s may have finally begun to turn a corner.

The wine was decanted and threw a considerable amount of sediment. If one squints the wine has a perceptible orangey tone at the rim and a dark ruby-colored center. I would not have guessed that it was 16 years old based on color alone. Upon opening the nose offers beautiful, classic sous-bois notes mixed with raspberries and herbs. On the palate the wine is medium-weight, and jam-packed with red fruit mixed with mushroom and herbal flavors that linger for a very long time. Mouth-puckering tannins make an appearance here and there, but they are not harsh and are now well-balanced by the underlying fruit. This is still a lively and youthful-tasting wine, although it is also showing some nicely evolved flavors and aromas. My bet is that this wine has considerable life ahead. 95 points.
