Which Nebbiolo are you drinking?

Thanks I’ll do that. Looking forward to the bottle.

I agree with Kent. My most recent note:

5/16/2024 - I like this wine: 95 points
Giacosa Riservas and Cappellano Francos (Hearth Restaurant, NYC): [Double-decanted at 1:30pm.] Sweet red fruit nose. Rich and complex in the mouth with a sweetness typical of 2007. A long spicy finish.

2016 Musso Barbaresco Rio Sordo - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco (9/26/2026)
Medium red. Lots of berry and red cherry fruit up front with a bit of herbal in the background. Although a bit dark there is nothing oxidized or Port like in the nose or the flavours. Most people would think this is a bit ripe for Barbaresco but I think it is quite comparable to the PdB Torre from 2016. (92 points)

Had some great Italian wines tonight..just posting photos of the Nebbiolos. Sadly can’t say I have any notes other than the 21 was surprisingly delicious but clearly young. The Barberseco was in my top 3 next to the 08 Brunello and 01 Napa Merlot (but the Merlot turned sour by the end of the night)
Thanks for the advice on decanting worked amazingly @Kent_Comley

Great little wine, had tons of life left in it and barely starting to show any tertiary notes. Surprisingly tasted young for a 20 year old wine, would’ve never guessed it was that old.

This is a tricky note to write. The wine is absolutely gorgeous in its composition, and this is probably the first 2021 Barolo/Barbaresco I’ve had that really felt as though it held quite a bit back.

I leapt at the opportunity because my dad was in town and at the end of all of my cooking was: Spiced Butternut Squash/Fennel/Pear Soup, and Creamy Polenta next to Rainbow Trout with Marjoram. I would have been crazy not to reach this far when it came to the wine!

The wine? Well: Aromatically reduced at first, but with 20-30 minutes ferrous and earthy notes came out, followed by black plum and cherries coming out at a trot, until they began to come out in droves. After about 90 minutes it gained mildly in complexity, with licorice and fennel notes arriving. The wine gained in body over time, but was consistently medium in body with robust but fine tannins. Acidity seems nailed perfectly, always in balance with the other characteristics of the wine, and always that sense of lift underneath.

This is a remarkably vibrant and comforting wine in its presence. Nonetheless, this felt a little like opening a book you’ve been dying to read and leaping straight to chapter 3. The prose is gorgeous, the characters seem true and alive, the plot is already thickening… and there is so much more context that is needed to understand the wine to come.

I cannot wait to have this again. In 5-6 years.

It shows my age, and proclivities, I guess, that notes like this confuse me. I can’t get my head around finding it at all remarkable that a 20 year old barolo had tons of life or tasted young. That IS young to me! :slightly_smiling_face:

Glad it showed well for you!

Enjoyed a lot of Nebbiolo while in La Morra this week. The 93 Marcarini surprised as it seemed much younger than expected. The Accomassos were a treat as always.

Sorry for no photo.

Last night we made a peposo and served Clendenen’s 2019 “The Pip” SMV Nebbiolo alongside. This was an outstanding wine and pairing. To me, a perfect balance of fruit, age, and a bit of acidity that cut through the unctuous beef. Unbelievable value at $13 at K+L. I immediately ordered 2 more and plan to enjoy in the short term.

1990 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano

10/2/2026 - I like this wine: 97 Points
[Double-decanted at 3pm for 3.5 hours.] Stunning nose of red fruit, fruitcake, and licorice. Huge and expansive in the mouth, yet delicate and light on its feet. Great structure and harmony. Cherries, tar, licorice, iron. Classic Giacosa SSR.

Opened this last night as well! The Clendenen Family Nebbiolo The Pip is a great value, more so at the current blowout price for the 2019. Paired it with scallops on a bed of spinach topped with romesco.

Popped open the 2nd half of this bottle after ~1 month under coravin. My first experience with Olek Bondonio. Super expressive nose with prominent herbal/minty notes. Fresh juicy dark berry fruit on the palate - tannins are present integrated beautifully with the fruit. Nice intensity overall but still maintains a sense of balance and freshness throughout - just a great young Barbaresco and will definitely seek out some more.

(as a side note, I’ve often found that young nebbiolo really opens up after a few weeks under coravin - I wonder if anyone else has had a similar experience)

Thanks for the check-in on 2021. And also nice to see the 2014 up thread.

I drink and buy a good amount of Olek and they never seem to shut down hard. So I am never really afraid to open one. 2020 is drinking very well now as well, and 2015 was really good this summer.

I do think these wines should be consumed within 15 years from vintage (I am guessing) based on how they are drinking and aging. But for me thats not really a problem if they never have long phases where they are closed down.

As mentioned by the others then the nose on these a very pretty. Just up my alley!

Did you stay at Uve? One of the pics looks like their courtyard

How was the Ca di Press showing?

We did stay at Uve, but that pic is not from there. Ithink the one you are referring to was from our dinner at L’Osteria Del Vignaiolo, which was our favorite restaurant during our stay, or our lunch at Battaglino, which was also very good.

The Ca Di Press was my first time trying their wines. Quite approachable for being so young. A very good first impression and a producer I’d like to delve into more.

Another Olek fan here @Kyle.S and @LasseK. Always a lovely perfume of red roses and ambergris. I thought the 19 was structured in line with the vintage, but the 21 was more open.

Cracked a half bottle of 2021 Vietti Barolo (Castiglione) last night and having had perhaps 15 vintages of these that it might be the best of the bunch as a young wine. Tannins are well covered by the pure and juicy fruits. One of those wines that shows impeccable balance and is eminently smashable!!
Edit: From 21 vintage labelled Barolo, removing Castiglione from label

2022 Trediberri Barolo (the only one, I believe) - I wasn’t a fan. Lots of interesting Barolo tastes but I found the wine to have apparent alcohol which stuck out for me. I’ve seen people raving about this wine, and I’ve very much liked Trediberri’s LN and Barolo in the past but this one didn’t make me happy like…

2019 A&G Fantino Cascina Dardi Barolo - a tasty citrus note added to a delicious Barolo. Second night, less citrus but tasting better. There will be no third night.

I loved the Barolo Marenca as I had it in More e Macine in July so immediately went online shopping once back home. I bought both the Marenca and Margheria but as Tuesday night pizza calls for something more affordable I knew I would have use for the Langhe Nebbiolo. A terrific example of the category - nothing against the baby Barolos but sometimes you just want a Nebbiolo that drinks easy right off the bat. Could see myself buying more.

  • 2019 Luigi Pira Langhe Nebbiolo - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC (6.10.2026)
A very serene, attractive and expressive nose of a very classic kind. Red cherry fruit and floral notes are pretty much on an equal footing, with faint wood and iron and tar notes on the background. Quite feminine in its expression. On the palate it feels lighter than its 14.5% alcohol would indicate yet with good fruit intensity and tannins that seem to become more grippy as the wine develops in the glass. Nicely textured. There is a bit of heat towards the finish but nothing excessive. Well balanced and rather ideal Langhe Nebbiolo proportions without any baby-Barolo ambition.
