Which Champagne are you drinking?

That room and that wallpaper are instantly recognizable. We had a tasting there several years ago at Champagne Deutz and it remains our favorite Champagne house visit to date. Marc treated us like royalty. It was unforgettable. I love their champagne and agree they don’t always get the accolades they deserve.

Did Marc help you host the event as well?

Cheers!

Yes, Marc was the host. Unbelievably warm!

We love their “Amour”. Maybe too much?

At the end of our stay, I had to try and convince Marc that I wasn’t a Deutz Fan Boy.

These:

I’d add:
Laurent Perrier Grand Siecle if you’re willing to cellar a while.
Billecart-Salmon Champagne Cuvée Elisabeth Salmon
Claude Cazals BdB Clos Cazals
André Clouet Champagne Un jour de 1911…
Larmandier-Bernier VV du Levant
Ployez-Jacquemart Liesse d’Harbonville

Now there’s a list of MVPs, IMHO.

Was incredibly impressed with the 2008 Henriot Cuvee Hemera Brut last week, which I think you can get in the US for < $150.

Love those additions. I’ll be visiting Billecarte and Larmandier Bernier both in June

Rosy, light copper color. Light, chalky berry aromas on the Nose. On the palate, this is slightly oxidative with high acidity; it has a lightly fruity light lambic note, too. Unfurled as it warmed towards room temp. — this did benefit from the air exposure and somewhat warmer serving temp.. I’ve been looking forward to trying this producer, and I did enjoy this bottle, but I didn’t love it – maybe it just needs a year or two in the cellar?

I second Steve’s addition of Henriot Cuvee Hemera (and I don’t generally like Henriot)

Would add

Hebrart Rive Gauche Rive Droit

Two others I’ve enjoyed in this price range

  • Doyard Clos de l’Abbaye
  • Etienne Calsac Clos des Maladries (and Les Revenants for something interesting!)

No idea how to decipher disg info (L240409 4093)

Very curious for your thoughts. I have heard the house has invested a lot of late into its entry level cuvée.

You have an early 2024 disgorgement and labeling.

Seems young, which Brad helpfully confirmed, but still pretty open with some air. Reticent bouquet. Nice chalk persistent on the palate. Interesting palate. Kind of hints at a barely oxidative style. Not racy. Finishes juicy. Costco has it for $42, which is very fair value. At $60-$70, there are many better options.

Launois “Severine” Blanc de Blancs:

This is a barrel aged Blanc de Blancs sourced entirely from Mesnil. It smells strongly of Ginger and baking spices and those notes present on the palate as well. It is rich, toasty, and has some density and breadth, but never feels fat, and stops short of entering hedonistic territory, It has enough acidity to be refreshing. Indeed, I drained the bottle by myself in a quick two hour window. If you like the style, this is a good QPR at $59.99.. I am a sucker for barrel aged Champagne and will be repurchasing. The oak is more noticeable here than other barrel aged Champagnes I have tried from the likes of Alfred Gratien, Henri Giruard and Vilmart, but it doesn’t overwhelm the wine. This is my first Champagne from this estate and I am looking forward to trying the other four or five bottlings which were just delivered.

Back to back bottles of 2016 Vouette et Sorbee Blanc d’Argile. Both corked. I have never experienced a corked Champagne before and these were identically nasty. I considered the possibility of these being over the hill due to minimal sulfur, but that wet cardboard tell was just too obvious. And here I had opened these to cheer myself up.

Look on the bright side, you can cross never had a corked champagne off your bucket list.

Fallet-Dart Grande Selection:

I had this once before, roughly a dozen years ago, and was very impressed for the money. I was not so enamored last night. At fridge temperature it bordered on undrinkable with a low acid and syrupy palate. It did ultimately find a decent balance when it warmed to cellar temperature and showed a lot of peach and coffee flavors. Seven years of lees aging bestowed a toasty profile and a nice texture, but it’s merits were diminished by the realization the extended aging was compensation for low quality fruit. Not horrible, particularly at $37, but nothing I would seek out again.
