Which Champagne are you drinking?

Extracted from a thread just posted: 4 wines tasted blind at dinner: 2014 Delamotte, 2014 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay, 2009 Dal Forno Valpolicella and 2002 Bouchard Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus

2014 DELAMOTTE BLANC de BLANC- blind; this bubbly expressed the essence of elegance and sophistication from the very outset and over the next 2 hours; following its medium yellow color came young and fresh flavors of lemon and lime which continued on and made up most of the taste profile while being delivered in a frothy, cotton candy like mousse; after about 20 minutes, it seemed to gain some body and intensity all the while maintaining its grace and charm, but now adding a more serious dimension; I’ve had many bottles of this vintage and this had to be the most elegant of all as I’ve experienced a bit more roundness, richness and complexity in the others, but I’m not complaining; this was a gem and loved by all. We did not get the house, but I did guess the vintage and 2 of us had it as a BdB.

Cheers,
Blake

NV Vilmart Grand Cellier
We enjoyed this. Fine energetic boule, a very crisp and chalky attack, fruit joining in, then a long leesy finish. Disgorgement July 2024. Ten months in large oak casks. Our first Vilmart. Hope to taste more.

NV Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) Champagne Brut Concordia to start the evening.

This is close, but not correct. The Lot number or number that starts with L actually refers to the labeling date of the bottle. The second four digit number beneath this number is associated with the disgorgement date. L220132 refers to a labeling in 2022 that is of some sequence or count up that has reached 132. As far as I know, it is not easy to link it to an exact date as this number can sometimes go past 365 and if it were simply a day of the year, I have seen bottles where the number that would make the labeling date occur before the disgorgement date. 2057 means the bottle was disgorged on the 57th day of 2022

Someone may know the exact details of how to decode the Charles and Piper Heidsieck Lot number and link things to exact days, but I don’t.

Just popped the cork…we’ve had a couple of the 2008s recently so very excited to see how this is doing.

I applied whisky bottle code deciphering. Apples to oranges, I guess.

The 2 at the end is what was messing me up.

I figured “22” meant 2022, but didn’t know if it was bottling or disgorgement. And then the “0132” wasn’t making sense to me because Jan. 32 doesn’t exist, and I figured “0132” did not represent 132nd day of the year because it doesn’t make sense to have that leading zero when the number of days in a year doesn’t exceed three digits. I assumed 2057 meant 8:57 pm, but I don’t really care about that part. And then absolutely no decoder on the PH website, or elsewhere that I could find. Thanks again for your guidance on this, and Happy New Year’s to you and yours!:clinking_glasses:

Wife and I went to a champagne tasting yesterday afternoon, then has a little champagne at dinner to celebrate NYE. Couldn’t catch disgorgements at the tasting, which was casual but led by a vey competent Somm at Blackberry Farms.

Delamotte - Les Mesnil Sur Oger - Brut NV - Lovely start to the tasting with pear, apple, white flower notes, light toast. This has lovely balance and is, for me, a very nice release for Delamotte. Satisfying style, nice and bright. This was 91ish for me.

Arlaux - Brut Nature Premier Cru NV - Apple, apricot, spice, with a hint of brioche and salinity. A crisp, dry finish, but hollow in the mid-palate for me, falling short of a satisfying champagne. 88-89 range, and just not really my style.

Diebolt-Vallois - Blanc de Blancs Brut 2002 - This is a lovely bottle of champagne, showing what is right about peak maturity for my palate, which riched baked apple tart, a hint of butterscotch, baking spices, ginger, and hazelnut, with nice lemon citrus cut keeping things from getting heavy. A deep and rich wine, but with nice acidity and balance. 93+. Drink it.

Stephane Coquillette - 2015 - Les Cles - Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru - Bright pear driven fruit with lemon, chalk, and zingy acidity. A faint hit of white cherry/light berry notes on the back end, with a touch of sweet tarts. It’s a bit light and racy, but not particularly dense or complex. This is 90ish for me. Learned later it’s a Brut Zero, and I don’t think that’s to its benefit.

Lelarge-Pugeot - Rose Extra Brut Premier Cru NV - I have never heard of this producer before, so this was a fun introduction. This shows strawberry basil, blood orange, hint of white flowers, bright acidity leading to a crisp finish. This is mouthwatering and has a lovely nose, but it’s also not that deep and complex. Faint strawberry notes are the star of the show. It’s just a light bright little wine. Still, an enjoyable enough rose. 90.

2014 Louis Roederer Cristal Brut - Lovely bright citrusy aromatics lead into big lemon, kumquat, tangy orange, chalky minerality. Dense and loaded with citrus and orchard fruit, ginger, and a hint of shortbread cookie. This is easily the most complex of the wines, even if not a great Cristal in my book, showing more of a racy citrus-driven profile than other recent vintages. It is excellent, but needs time. I would keep paws off this for a while if possible. 94-95.

Then, after dinner:

2008 Billecart Salmon Louis Salmon BdB - Note really notes, just some impressions after a big meal and a lovely bottle of burgundy. This is bright and fun with jazz apple, citrus, white toast, chalky minerality, and great verve. As it warms, the nose expands offering slightly richer fruit notes, with a hint of dried pineapple bolstering the snappy citrus and apple. Some spicy notes on the finish. Lovely and exuberant. A banger. 95.

Fascinating set of Champagne to end the year.

The Moncuit was an extra late bottle as we ran out of bubbles. It is not the first time I have it. I think they are really good and manages to have some roundness to them and not feel hard even though they are zero dosage.

I love RdJ. Sadly the 04 had a slightly strange kinda metallic aftertaste. It wasn’t too much and i still enjoyed a glass of it as it was amazingly fresh, but it took the edge of what could have been a very good Champagne.

My first rosé Selsosse. Really really interesting, but I am not really sure if i found it more interesting than good? Felt like a slightly oxidative orange/rose with bubbles…

The rest was just amazing in their respective styles. The depth in taste on the 1996 late release Heidsieck was crazy good.

New Year festivities. This was the first of 4 bottles of the ‘15 Emotion where I’ve gotten the greenness mentioned here. Overall it was dull too. Hoping it was an off bottle as I still have a few left. Otherwise, the others showed well but no clear standout for me. The wife and guests slightly preferred the LGA

Ulysses Colin Les Pierrieres V18.

Green apples, pear, bit of lemon, chalk and salinity. This was a big champagne. At least for me maybe more time in the bottle to smooth out some edges. Will check out the remaining bottles in a few years.
