Which Champagne are you drinking?

From last night with our group.

  • NV Goodfellow Family Cellars Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs Durant Vineyard - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills (12/12/2024)
Served blind. April 2024 disgorgement. 100% Chard with 1 gm of dosage. Initial aromatics were a subtle mix of asian 5-spice and reduction. In the palate, apple and what seemed like some inflection of wood (maybe the source of the aromatic spice?). With air this rounds out with a fleshy profile and ginger in the finish. The fruit then evolves to a cinnamon with crushed apple, a balanced yet soft texture. At the end of dinner I retested this, the wine was totally still. The aromatics now with a toasted note and flint, with apple and cinnamon palate and what seemed like a little pastry. My read on this was positive, and I'd not want to suggest this is dominated by brown spice but it does appear and impart presence to the wine, which was fine for me. I enjoyed this.
  • NV Tarlant Champagne Zero Brut Nature - France, Champagne (12/12/2024)
Served blind. The previous bottle I logged and noted the wine as a 2007 but in reality this has reserves in it so I'll join the crowd and just go NV this time. Disgorged September 2014, with no dosage and 1/3rd each of Chard, Pinot Noir and Meunier. Golden colored, with lemon, caramel and some peach/stone fruit. Oxidizing pear, too with a tartish finish. The balance on this seemed odd to me, given the golden color and oxidative profile, yet retaining a moderate amount of acidity, which kinda clashes for my palate. I like Tarlant Zero but this composition with the 2007 based doesn't work well.

Looking at our notes, this likely shows best at the slightly warmer temperature.

I definitely want to explore more of this producer. Grand Cru Selections brings them in iirc

Very cool. I have a bottle remaining from those I bought in 1979 in anticipation of our son’s birth. At that time, there was very little Krug on the west coast and my distributor friend bartered with an east coast distributor for a case for me. As a result, I have no idea what’s in the bottle.

Cedric VV - Love these wines. A favorite go to.

These were part of a bigger retailer tasting, but I specifically wanted to highlight them as these were poured from the Cage Champagne portfolio that Garth Hogdon brings in. If you aren’t familiar with him, for years he was the national rep for Krug but left it a few years back and started up his own import company focusing solely on very small champagne producers. I’ve had a bunch of other wines from this portfolio and he’s bringing in some absolute bangers that people should seek out!

NV J.M. Gandon Champagne Les Pièces Brut Nature V20 - France, Champagne (12/11/2024)
I dream of Champagne (Cru and Domaine, Portland OR): Well this is a fun surprise. Barely any of this is made and not much makes it to the US. So, for it to emerge from under the table brings a good bit of happiness for me. The nose is layered and robust, but with a good bit of poise to the tones of flint, warm dough, freshly baked bread, stone fruits, red apples, quince, pears, meyer lemons, yellow flowers, and a touch of baking spices to round it all out. The Medium bodied feel is well rounded and balanced with a lot of length to the finish as well as tart, high acidity that holds everything together. It will be difficult to come across a bottle of this again, though I badly hope I do! (93 pts.)

NV Caillez-Lemaire Champagne Brut Rosé - France, Champagne (12/11/2024)
I dream of Champagne (Cru and Domaine, Portland OR): This is pretty and fresh as it really draws you in immediately with tones of strawberries, red berries, crushed rocks, green apples, citrus notes, pears, rose petals, biscuits, cinnamon spices, and a fairly big hit of saline. There is excellent depth and poise to go with the attractive qualities. The Medium bodied feel carries through the freshness and elegance of the nose along with tart, high acidity that makes your mouth water. This is showing beautifully and with a lot of freshness that is irresistible. It’s hard not to take your nose away from the glass and should be completely enjoyed in its current form. (92 pts.)

NV Daniel Moreau Champagne Ligne de Mire - France, Champagne (12/11/2024)
I dream of Champagne (Cru and Domaine, Portland OR): The nose is fresh and lifted with a distinct flinty base and background to the tones of red apples, stone fruits, crushed rocks, a touch of smoke, yellow flowers, pears, biscuits, baking spices, and some saline. There is excellent depth and salinity here that is almost Chablis-like. The Medium bodied feel is deft and fresh with tart, high acidity that has a nice bit of cut. This is excellent and my first introduction to this tiny producer. There is a pristine quality to the tones that adds some tension and intrigue that makes you pay closer attention to the wine. (92 pts.)

NV Daniel Moreau Champagne Pièce Maîtresse - France, Champagne (12/11/2024)
I dream of Champagne (Cru and Domaine, Portland OR): The nose shows off some lovely autolytics that are noticeable right away. Surrounding those autolytics lie balanced tones of toast, red apples, nectarines, pears, chamomile, biscuits, meyer lemons, hazelnuts, and yellow flowers. There is a seamless style that works really well with the autolytics and tree fruits playing well together. The Medium bodied feel shows off excellent balance and poise with tart, high acidity that integrates well while still retaining some zip. This works really well with what it does. It’s honest and balanced as it leans more into the leesy notes than citrus tones. (90 pts.)

NV Famille Delouvin Champagne La Tuilerie - France, Champagne (12/11/2024)
I dream of Champagne (Cru and Domaine, Portland OR): The nose shows off a toastier side with roasted nuts being the first thing that I notice before giving way into tones of red apples, quince, bosc pears, nectarines, yellow flowers, brioche, toast, and warm dough. There is good depth, but with a slight bit of brutishness behind it. The Medium bodied feel shows off that more robust and toasty quality along with crisp, high acidity that provides a good spine. This likely could use 24ish months to fully come together and smooth out some of the rough edges. It will always be on the brawny side as that’s just how it comes off. (90 pts.)
At a high end Cantonese restaurant in Hong Kong last night where it went beautifully with the skin course of Peking Duck.

I’ve heard many people disparage the & bottling, but my experience has been very good. A savory and vinous champagne with good body that plays well with a variety of foods.

Here’s the note on the Roederer Collection 245 that I promised:

Lemon, brioche, and hints of mineral and soursop show on the nose, carrying over to the palate. It shows nice acidity on the attack, then takes on weight with a little nuttiness through the middle before concluding with a pleasantly tart finish. I’m not the most discerning of Champagne drinkers but I quite enjoyed it.

This sent me to Google. Did you come across this in your international travels, or have you seen it in the States? Now I’m intrigued!!

I went to a snorkeling and sailing camp in the British Virgin Islands as a young teen and a kind local man shared a ripe soursop with us fresh from the tree. It was delicious, refreshing, and unforgettable. You can find soursop nectar and sometimes frozen soursop at grocery stores with a good international selection and a great local international market sometimes has them fresh.

Nicolas Maillart Chaillots Gillis 2014
Better than the bottle I had 6 months ago. Good example of a brut nature BdB. Bright acidity, energetic mousse. There’s a pleasing “leesiness” to this wine. It’s light on its feet. The midpalate is muted? Unremarkable? Nevertheless, a nice wine and ok value at $75. Would be interested in trying this with a few more years of age.

Welcome to my home town! It’s nice weather for your visit. Hope you’re enjoying The Regent!

Thank you! We’re here tonight and tomorrow night. DM if you’d like to try and have a drink.

The Regent is bittersweet for us. We stayed many, many times at the hotel when it was an Intercontinental, and this is our first time since the pandemic and the change. My husband used to come to HK 6 or 7 times a year when he was with Zachys, and always stayed here. So maybe 30 or more visits. The renovations are beautiful, but some choices are obviously more about looks than function, which is a bit frustrating. But the restaurant is still wonderful and pretty much the same, despite the new name. We had an excellent meal there last night, and greeted many old friends who are still on staff.

I buy it at farmer’s markets when I visit Hawaii. There are also some businesses that will ship, but I haven’t had good luck with that.

Bought a 6-pack as my wine fridge at home was almost out of bubbles.

Newest edition. 2022 base, Disgorged 2024. 30% reserve dating back to 2010 or 2011 if i remember correctly. 3g/l dosage.

It would obviously benefit from 2-3+ years, but with a bit of air and temperature it becomes approachable and rather delicious now.

I like these and the price (atleast here in Europe) still makes it a great “everyday” Champagne.

Glad to hear it as I just picked up a few, though I need to double check the disgorgement date.

Had it a few times in Costa Rica where it’s also called Guanabana which is more fun to say. That said, I don’t know that I could tell you how it tastes other than sweet with a tang, so not as memorable for me!

I burned through a half case in a hurry and thought the disgorgement I had was really enjoyable and punched well for the price. I’m a believer.

Jan 2022 disgorgement, Selosse Côte Faron. Quite rich but only quite. Oaky, a bit. Red fruits and some peach. Energetic and very fine.

Fine long lasting perlage, intense and complex. Pear, citrus, berries, fine spices, stone fruits, yellow flowers, some brioche, light oxi notes, mineralic. Fresh and salty, full body, nice tension, balanced and long lasting. Great Champagne :top::clinking_glasses:
