Which Champagne are you drinking?

Ah crap. Thanks for that. :joy:

Laherte Freres Rose de Meunier Extra Brut NV - A fun cranberry colored rose with blood orange, cranberry, citrus, tangy apricot, sea spray. It’s a decent wine. Happy to have enjoyed, but won’t be going back to the well here. It’s good, I just didn’t find it very exciting, particularly complex, or so enjoyable that I want to restock. 2.5 g/l.

Exactly how this wine landed with me, and I’d say I’m generally a fan of LF.

There is a vintage Laherte Freres Les Beaudiers that’s a saignee from Meunier that’s more interesting. I enjoy the Rose de Meunier, but like the rest of the line up more.

5 very enjoyable bottles this past week including '13 Emotion, tough to stop drinking this. As usual, my dining companions had not tried this before and they loved it. I am guilty of thinking that '07 Comtes was going to be an off vintage Champagne to be forgotten. Man, I was so wrong. This started drinking great about a couple of years ago and it just keeps getting better. The fruit that was non-existent on release is on full display now and it tows a fine a line between oxidative and fresh. Our next CdC was from Vilmart, '08 and this was full of lemons, but in a good way. This has plenty of runway ahead but I find it more open than the '08 CdC from Taittinger. Speaking of CdC, we also enjoyed a bottle of '12 Comtes. This reminds me a lot of '02 with a lower acid feel which I find odd given the vintage. However, I am fine with that assuming it continues to age gracefully like the '02 did. And what would the week be without something from Roederer? This time it was the '16 rose and this continues to impress. It took 3 nights to finish this bottle and each night it was drinking fine. I received another case of this today, $80/btl which I think is a great value. Btw, the Pougets was great with chicken.

Agree but Beaudiers is 2x the price (roughly) of the RdM. Your post reminded me…when I was fortunate to travel there in 2022, I visited L-F and took some photos. This one is of Beaudiers, with the L-F domaine there in the background towards the top of the hill.

I like that combination!
I will look for this.
Thanks.

Agreed, I’m happy to drink the Rose de Meunier and part of the reason is that can usually find at a reasonable price. Not a wine to think about and there are probably other good options in the same price point, though.

Great bottlees and notes, Jon. As far as that quote… I still think without exception none of my high-end '08 Champagnes have reached their full potential, and some are still downright tight. I agree about the '07 Taittinger Comtes; it’s outstanding. I only bought it because it was a package deal with my 2008’s. That turned out to be a fortuitous mandate.

At the moment the Rosé de Meunier is my “house rosé” for daily-drinking - I like it rather much for that (rather than for intellectual contemplation). I have recently got a couple of the Les Beaudiers (although NV) so I’ll be interested to try them.

Here in Hong Kong the price difference isn’t so large: ~US$50 for the Rosé de Meunier, ~$62 for the NV Les Beaudiers.

I can get the Rose de Meunier at that price or somewhat less, Les Beaudiers more like $70-75. I think the Beaudiers is one of the Champagnes that is from a single vintage albeit not labeled as such.

Very nice Jon. I’m with you on the Emotion, 2007 Comtes including the rose, 08 Vilmart and 12 Comtes. Thanks for the test on the 16 LR rose; I’m also a fan of this release.

Cheers

Extracted from a thread just posted re 4 wines tasted blind at dinner:

2007 LOUIS ROEDERER CRISTAL BRUT- poured blind for the others; 58% Pinot Noir, 42% Chardonnay; the color had a gray hue weaving through light yellow; the first nose and small sip had definitive oxidative notes with musty, dusty butterscotch and caramel most evident; but then, the next nose and taste did not as it was full of honeyed yellow apple, some mango and apricot and I’m thinking we are good here; but the next nose and taste was just like the initial one and the oxidative notes never did completely go away; it was full bodied, had a creamy texture with noticeable weight and possessed bracing acidity, more than I can ever remember in any Cristal as has been the bottle variations in this vintage over the last 4-5 years. So, as with previous bottles, this was inconsistent and all over the place and I think I’ll pass on adding more 2007. Next up, a re-try of the 2006.

Cheers,
Blake

Back when the 2007 was released I tried to get several friends to go in on a case with me at a good price. They all said they were waiting on the 2008

My ability to say I told you so goes only a short, way towards balancing my sorrow at not owning any.

I’m behind on notes here once again.

From a special dinner a few weeks ago:

Clouet Rose no.3 I’ve been in a rose bubbles funk lately. Just not finding as much joy in them as their counterparts. Which is weird because i was really enjoying them a year or two ago. This one might’ve helped me see the other side again, lots of strawberry, some bread notes, touch of saline. Went well with oysters.

The 2006 CdC thanks to all of you for shoving this in our faces all the time. I finally got a bottle and wow, it is a great champagne, so well rounded now at this age, still holding onto to some power and acid. A really pretty Blanc de Blancs.

Got my hands on the Lehmann glass in the US now that they’re back in stock. This was the first bottle I had them in. I love Gallimard. Small producer, great pricing and always deliver to scratch that champagne itch.

Gaspard Brochet Champagne 333.c

Very interesting Champagne, lots of various flavors, brioche, nuts, bruised fruit, even slight melon rind. A good amount of vinousity and acid.
