Those of you who have a built-in outdoor BBQ/kitchen, which built-in accessories do you use the most / most value?
I’m building-in a BBQ area that’s quite space constrained (9ft wide), so I need to be judicious in selecting the built-in accessories. Some of the items I’m considering:
drawers (double or triple)
paper towel holder
access doors (single or double)
trash (single or double)
refrigerator
area for sonos speaker (anybody have a suggestion on how to do this?)
I never use the trashcan space or the fridge. With trash it’s easier for me to just bring it in. Where i live it gets crazy hot, so an outdoor fridge that I would rarely put stuff into stays unplugged.
I’d either do an access door or a drawer… probably an access door. I just shove all kinds of stuff in there, charcoal (for my charcoal grill), tools, etc. Have space for a sink?
Unfortunately I’d don’t have space / plumbing access for a sink.
I am leaning against the fridge. But am a bit surprised to hear trash isn’t very handy. I’d probably take it out after use as well but it seems a nicer option than a portable trash can/bag when people are over.
I would say lighting number one, but space for things like pizza stones, veggie baskets, fish baskets etc as well as hooks or bars for grill tools would be nice.
Easy clean up surfaces are also a requirement in my mind.
For the speaker, I would just put in standard outdoor speakers, and run the line back to somewhere in the house (I have a closet that has my main A/V and network equipment in it). Then you can hook up a Sonos to it, or use some other system, and switch it out later without too much hassle. I wouldn’t do anything built-in that locked me into a specific system (though I’m not sure Sonos has anything for that type of installation anyway). If you can, it might be nice to have separate speakers (with separate volume controls) for the cooking area and the eating/partying area.
Rather than a fridge, a cooler sink (I think that is what they call them) you can dump your ice and drinks into it and it has a drain in the bottom to empty it.
Fan mounted to keep smoke etc. moving away from the grill. Minimize the Bernouilli principle of smokey grills.
Storage for as listed above, rotisseries, pizza stones, extra grates and a drawer by the grill for grill tools (brushes etc.)
Task lighting
Good drawer storage for the various woods and charcoals. At any given time I’ll have bulk pecan, oak, apple, cherry chunks and also various chips. This in addition to charcoal.
