With EP season in full swing, I’m in the mood for some Bordeaux tonight. Looking through some of my recent acquisitions I haven’t tried yet, which bottle do you think will be the most ready/approachable?
2000 La Fleur de Bouard
2000 Pavie Decesse
2005 Pape Clement
2003 Pontet-Canet
I had the 2000 Pavie Decesse about 2.5 years ago. While likely still good, it’s getting distinctly pruney and needs to be drunk up. Would suggest double decant and serve immediately
The 03 Pontet a Canet, which was quite open and enjoyable from 2010 - 2015, seems to have firmed up considerably over the last several years. At least that has been my experience. So I’d double decant a couple hours in advance if you go with the PC.
Thanks guys! Went with the 2000 Pavie Decesse. Double decanted. Perfect bottle, looked mint.
Not getting much prune, but heavy tobacco and cigar box. Lovely smooth and integrated tannins. Good acidity, black fruits. Very dark and dense on the palate. Nose is still vibrant and fresh. I would say this bottle is on the way down, but not far off from peak. Not my favorite, personally.
Agree. Had the 2003 PC a year ago and thought was going through a closed phase. Had it also 3 years ago and was a bit more open for business. I’d let that slumber for a few more years.
