I purchased a set of 10 Gabriel StandArt two years ago (?). They have become not only my everyday glass but at times I even use them for special white bottles. At first wasn’t so enthralled, but then they just become very comfortable! Highly recommend. Only broke one so far and that was a guest that had a little too much and let it slip.
I’m always surprised when I hear people complain about how fragile the Gabriel Golds are, because I’ve been using them since 2017 and have never broken one. Maybe just luck? I dunno. But it’s certainly not a given that they will break…
No joke. I loved GGG but I broke all of mine. I’m now Glasvin. I don’t like them as much as GGG or Zalto but they’re not far off and so much less painful when I break them.
Its so wild to hear these stories about the GGG’s being so fragile. Ive been drinking from the same 2 glasses multiple times per week for at LEAST 4 years without issue. And i even hand-wash em!!
We purchased the StandArts for use when sturdier glasses are the more prudent choice than the Liberte, e.g. when entertaining. They are a great–if not ideal–combo of sturdiness and versatility. Specifically, I find them to be just a hair below the Liberte, but more importantly a substantial upgrade to the S-Z Pure/Tour 18-oz red wine glass which they replaced. For sake of reference, we drink mostly rhone varietals & blends (old- and new world) and rioja.
Count me as one who has found the GGG very fragile. I really like them, and they were my go-to for a long time when pricing was better, but eventually they all broke and I’ve since switched to Grassl and Glassvin.
I just tried the Standarts at a 2021 Jadot white and red preview tasting. They worked great for sampling both whites and reds, though it must be said, these were sample volumes (ie: small). Was impressed enough to plump for 6 as a step up “entertaining glass”. My only beef is that base is not super wide, something I like for the sake of stability as the night wears on and blood alcohol levels rise…that said, they ARE sturdy.
When it is just us at home we like Grasls: Mineralite’ for bubs and whites, Liberte’ for anything and Cru for reds / Burg geeks (ok, me). Love these.
Am fan of Zalto’s Universal too, pricey though they may be.
We are also very much a Grassl house: Liberte’s get used most often, for all reds except bordeaux varietals (1855’s being the choice here 9 times out of 10) and pinot (Cru’s, obviously), and bigger, richer whites. Mineralite for SauvBl, Albarino, Riesling, and bubbles.
Yep, i hear you on the stability thing, but i actually prefer the size of the GG’s base over other glasses as it fits much better in your hands. My biggest complaint with the Grassl’s and the reason i dont really use them is that the base is so wide that it feels a bit ‘off’ in my hands (and i have big hands). Different strokes
Same for me, specifically that the base knocks against my wrist while I swirl the wine unless I cock my wrist way out to the side. Maybe it’s just that my hands are too small, but I prefer to think the base is too wide!
