I’ve been fortunate this year in that I haven’t had anything too terrible. The worst was probably an '05 Voge Cornas VV, bought in my early wine drinking days.
A friend picked up several of the 1990 Pichon Lalandes at auction and they have all been quite nice. I had several in the early to mid 1990s, though, for which RP’s rating would have been generous.
2012 Anthill Farms Pinot Noir Campbell Ranch Vineyard - CT says 90, I say 80 (funk, weird orange medicinal…)
2012 Anthill Farms Pinot Noir Peters Vineyard - CT says 91, I say 86 (more strange flavors)
2011 Torrin Law Vineyard - CT says 93, I say 87 (wine was hotter than the Texas pavement in August)
I know, I know…anything scored in the 80s is a “B”, but on my compressed scale, I would neither buy nor recommend. My all-time low score, regardless of year, was for a 2011 Meiomi Pinot Noir consumed in 2014, which tasted like cherry pie filling and Robitussin (WS scored it a 92).
The problem here is that cherry pie filling is actually pretty good - even the cheap stuff, straight from the can. The stuff in a Meiomi bottle seems like chemically manufactured cherry substitute, loaded with aspartame or saccharine.
I have had good and bad. The first few times were average at best, and made my happy that I never spent any of my own money on some. But, a few months ago I had one (2005 I think, but I’m not certain), and it was sublime. Had blind with about ten other bottles - top flight Napa cabs and Bordeaux - and it was top two for everyone. I was as surprised as anyone. Now, it will take many more performances like that for me to even consider spending my own money, but it at least made me change my mind.
Are the 2007’s as bad as the 2003’s? I learned my lesson on the 2003’s and drank any 2007’s I had 3-4 years ago. I thought the 2007’s were on a similar track to the 2003’s.
I haven’t had any 2007s but I had a 2003 Cuvee de Mon Aieul last night. I did not enjoy it at all. I expect to find professional scores around 3 points higher than cellartracker, and that’s fine. Here on this wine I struggled to get through a glass. It was overextracted pruney raisiny and a bit too much heat. Maybe I had a bad bottle but I suspect it may have been a victim of the hot vintage. Have had several other vintages of this wine and they have been great. I would give it 85 points and that’s generous. YMMV
