What's the Optimal Quantity for ordering wines?

That’s completely different. If they have to ship 1, 750 mL bottle in its own box, they lost a considerable amount of money on that bottle. In the scenario you described, with 13 bottles and 1 magnum, their cost of materials alone is probably higher than $35, then they’re paying for all of the shipping fees (for 3 boxes) on top of that. That really hurts their profit on the whole order. Full cases mean a lot more profit, thus they can (presumably) cover those costs while still making a decent amount of money. Personally, I would not want a winery I like to be losing money, or making really minimal profit, because I refuse to order in quantities that make sense.

Absolutely, to the bolded part. And “it wouldn’t matter” is just not true, for the reasons I outlined in my previous post, unless something only matters if it matters to one person.

I’d be frustrated too. I will say that I have had great experiences with Lopa over quite a few orders, and that getting an order shorted or cancelled can happen with any retailer. I suspect you just had some bad luck here where it happened twice in a row.

Well now I am ordering 13 bottles from the latest Bedrock release. I want less but this chat has inspired me.

Shipping costs have two effects on the quantity I order.

  1. I end up buying more to fill out a case or some such to make shipping costs more palatable or get the free shipping deal.

Or…

  1. I abandon my cart completely because, well, screw that.

There seems to be no in-between.

For me, the flow chart has a continuation for point 2.

2a) Find a Local shop that has a lower all in cost.
2b) Really say screw that and don’t drink.
