I don’t like to eat cupcakes, and I hate when that’s the only choice - mostly I hate frosting. So you could say I hate to eat cupcakes. And I hate to eat kittens too. But not the same as hating kittens.

Can something be hip if it’s been around in this country alone since the 17th century?

The description sounds like a muffin to me, without frosting and stuff on top of it.
It could be a Swedish thing but like Adam this has been on my mind whenever cupcakes are around among our American friends. Before those first times it was all muffins to me, cupcakes were the sweeter version. Not sure my perception has changed.
We bake muffins when we want to make something simple, less sweet kind of healthier that ticks the excitement and tasty boxes.
I can’t speak for Sweden, but in the US muffin batter will be denser and with less sugar, compared to a cupcake, which will be standard cake batter. It is named literally - it’s cake in a cup.
A muffin often has whole or large pieces of things like berries or nuts stirred into the batter. A cupcake never does. A muffin can be made with non-wheat flour, as with a cornbread muffin. A cupcake is always a small cake. A cupcake is always a dessert. A muffin is never dessert, it is more like either a bread (corn muffin) or a semi-sweet breakfast pastry (blueberry muffin).
A muffin is often sprinkled with coarse sugar on top, but never frosted. A cupcake is almost always frosted.
Most muffins are much larger than most cupcakes, generally speaking.

Yes. but that’s where things went wrong with the coarse sugar! I could see how people who only ate commercial versions might see the two converge, because commercial muffins have been way over-sweetened for a long time.
But at least in my experience growing up, muffins were for breakfast and not necessarily sweet beyond any fruit inside, whereas cupcakes were full-on sweet cake desserts.
Also, Seinfeld never made an episode about cupcake tops.
