Whats Good For The Goose...

I made goose for our Thanksgiving feast. A wine from just down the San Francisco peninsula made for a rather nice pairing…

  • 2006 Rhys Alesia Pinot Noir San Mateo County - USA, California, San Francisco Bay, San Mateo County (11/26/2009)
Lovely dark brick red color. Very enticing aromas of exotic spices, cherry juice and earth. On the palate it is not as extraordinary though mostly very pleasing - cherry, spice, earth and a noticable herbiness. However, every now and then there is an unpleasant taste of pith or grapeseed on the finish. Nonetheless this is a very elegant wine and paired well with goose. Very Good/Excellent

And for leftovers today I opened a Reignac. I think it will be better tomorrow…

  • 2000 Reignac - France, Bordeaux, Bordeaux Supérieur (11/27/2009)
I’ve had this wine 7 or 8 times since release and everytime it’s totally different, from fruitbomb to austere. Dark reddish purple. Aromatically going into one of it’s austere phases - smoke, pencil and pluot dominate. Cherry, plum, a hint of oak and smoke on the palate. I can still tell it’s got classy bones but its just not showing tonight. Very Good.

Thanks for the notes. I popped an 00 Reignac tonight and its just too much oak soup for me to really like it. A great party wine (enjoyable flavors while talking to strangers), but lacking any real nuance. Decent at $18, but I would not pay any higher. 87 points in the right context only, though ymmv.

I have been leaving my 2000 Reignac. It has a lot of stuffing and yes a lot of oak. The 2001 drinks awfully well right now though…

… is good for the Gander. I just can’t get that out of my mind… ok… now I feel better…

LOL, James. Thanks, I needed that too.

Pmenkes, I had very similar notes on the Alesia. I only wish I had bought more than 2 bottles.
