My spring shipment just arrived. Now to exercise patience.
WHOA- That was like they didn’t mark it up from wholesale on those ?!?! ![]()
Thanks for the tip, i’m excited to share these with friends and family over the coming years!
And the journey continues, dipping our toes into the current Spring release…
2024 Garden Gnome Grenache Blanc
Yuzu skins, honey, chamomile tea. Theres a decadence here, an oily/waxy feel that gives this wine a lush mouthfeel (or maybe that’s the unfiltered nature of the wine?) that I really enjoy, but it’s not overdone. Shimmering golden sunlight, like spring in a glass (93 Pts)
Gonna let mine sit a couple of weeks before I dive in.
2023 Chardonnay Mariana’s Vineyard
White fruits plus a little lime, white flowers, ample acidity, substantial and creamy but not heavy mouthfeel. Clean. This is a really good California Chardonnay.
Thank you! Though they don’t exactly know what the word means, my kids (7&9) told Kate and me that we incorrectly named the wine “Garden Gnome”. They said instead, it should be named the “Sexy Gnome.”
And so it is.
Thank you, Matt! The 23 is singing right now.
Picked this one out for my birthday wine! I was such a fan of the Merlot that I needed to open the Cab Franc for reference…
2023 Extradimensional Cabernet Franc Mariana’s Vineyard
Pure dark cherry, blood orange, cranberry spray, graphite, rosemary, and Extradimensional magic. Grippy and looooong on the palate, this one has some stuffing.
The Mariana’s Merlot is a tough act to follow but this cab franc is matching it stride for stride in pleasure. While definitely cut from the same cloth they are very different. The Merlot is wearing a tux whereas the cab franc is wearing a leather jacket (IE the merlot was very suave on the palate and the Franc is a bit more burly with the tannin). Both incredibly lifted and energetic in typical Extradimensional fashion. This is absolutely lovely now but I do see some upside! (96+ Pts)
It’s a fantastic Cab Franc, but I thought it leaned more to Saumur-Champigny where the 2021 leaned right-bank Bordeaux. No shade to either, as the 2021 reminded me of Cheval Blanc, and the 2023 has a definite Clos Rougeard vibe!
Happy belated birthday @Branson_G_Ropp ! Thank you for letting us be part of the celebration!
Love this!
Thank you, David!
Long time listener, first time buyer. What order would you drink these? My categories are: 1) drink now, 2) drink over next 1-2 years, 3) hide in the cellar.
1x - 2022 Figure Ground Mourvèdre, Zin, Carignane, Plus!
1x - 2022 Marvelous Mourvèdre Old Vine Mourvèdre YEAH!
1x - 2023 Brousseau Vineyard Grenache
3x - 2023 Mariana’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
1x - 2023 Evangelho Carignane
1x - 2023 Mariana’s Vineyard Merlot
1x - 2023 Mourvèdre Yeah!
2x - 2024 Evangelho Mourvèdre
1x - 2024 Sonoma Valley UFO
I don’t have an answer for all of these bottles as I’ve not tried them all but I will chime in on a couple. Also i probably sound like a broken record but I love these wines
2024 Sonoma Valley UFO - I was a huge fan of this when I opened a few months ago. It was singing and I snagged a few more. I think its great to open in the near term as the weather warms. Very aromatic and expressive white. You can get a feel here for how Hardy can create blends that are far superior than the sum of their parts!
2023 Mariana’s Merlot - Ok, this is in contention for my wine of the year so my advice is this; open in the near term and if you love it, you might be able to snag a couple more? The caveat here is that I do appreciate and enjoy young wines, so take that with a grain of salt. I thought the Merlot was amazing and more open for business than the Cab Franc as I noted a few posts above.
I have not yet to opened the 2023 Brosseau Grenache or the 2024 Evangelho Mourvedre but a few well respected memebers upstream have had very good things to say about those!
Additionally I tried the 2023 Mariana’s Cabernet Sauvignon at the tasting room a while back and it fit right in with the excellent Cab Franc and Merlot. If you have 3 and are interested in learning about the style and site of Mariana’s I think thats another great option to open soon. I do think these are approachable in their youth. Have fun!
I think the only ones you need to hide are a couple of bottles of the Cabernet. The Mourvèdre focused wines can be drunk in the near term, but my experience is that they are at least medium term bottles in terms of development, so maybe try one to get a read on them, and then decide whether to drink soon or 3-5 years down the road.
The rest I would just have fun with over the next few years.
Figure Ground has been great since release and I’ve had 4 bottles. It’s been bangin’ with lamb burgers, regular burgers, and a hanger steak.
I agree with David on the Mourvèdre, but the Mourvèdre YEAH last week was great. The Grenache is quite good now but has some serious upside, I think. Merlot and Cab are both great, especially with a decant, and last glasses were the best.
In general, almost every wine I’ve had from Hardy benefits from a decant ![]()
Glad you’re on the train! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts.
I’ve been drinking the 23 Mourvèdre Yeah for over the past 5 days now. Tonight (day 5 ) I would say is the most complete glass and drinking at peak.
That implies a LOT of air. Thanks for the data point.
Just to add on…I don’t decant many wines, but I decant most of Hardy’s wines.
Patrick- This would be my order
No need to hold- Singing now.
2024 UFO
2022 Figure Ground (still decant 45+)
Both will hold for several years but they are delicious now.
Next, I’d go in this order. Please note all of these can go for years.
1x - 2023 Brousseau Vineyard Grenache
This will age nicely, but it is so good with a decant. I sold our last cases of the 2023 to Chez Noir yesterday (1 star in Carmel)
1x - 2022 Marvelous Mourvèdre Old Vine Mourvèdre YEAH!
Though full of density and stuffing. It is also red fruited and fun. Decant in the AM drink at night (or sit on it. I put this one above the Mourvèdre Yeah! primarily due to 22 vs 23. Due to the higher temps, 22s are more approachable.
1x - 2023 Mourvèdre Yeah!
I love this wine. It is more Bandol-esque than something like a straight up Shake Ridge Mourvèdre from us, but it still has our brightness and freshness.
1x - 2023 Evangelho Carignane
Will age forever, and at the same time Evangelho ages at a geological pace. 2hr decant.
2x - 2024 Evangelho Mourvèdre
Drink one, bury the other?
1x - 2023 Mariana’s Vineyard Merlot
Such a hard call with this. I was pouring this yesterday and it is wonderful as a baby. It will evolve nicely, but it is so so so good. (also going on the list at Chez Noir)
3x - 2023 Mariana’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
I’d pop one this year or next and stash the other 2.
