What were your big "ah ha" moments from 2009

some of my biggest ah ha’s were

  • The liberating feeling of dropping from coveted mailing lists…or not adding them

  • The gratification of not hunting down “the next hot wine with great scores” from the latest releases of WA, WS, ST or AM

  • The comfort of knowing there is an ocean of excellent wine out there

  • How easy it is to not buy over $50 bottles and how good many < $30 bottles are

  • Deleting an email and emptying your trash keeps you from spending money

  • Not paying any attention to the WS Top 100, especially the top 10 and being happier about it

  • How many very good Napa Cabs are out there in the $65 and under camp

  • Not posting in threads that get crazy or out of hand has made the BB experience much more fun

  • California Syrah is every bit as interesting, exciting & compelling as Cabernet and Pinot

  • Making a garage wine is both harder and easier than I thought

  • The “crushing” feeling of missing out on helping out with harvest this year

Unfortunately (for my bank account), Barolo.

There are tremendous values out there from nearly all nations.

Cooler climate Syrah from CA can be very Cote-Rotie-esque.

I don’t like ANYTHING RMP scored 100 points (had Saxum James Berry last night, confirmed my disgust for these wines).

Burgundy =(

[thumbs-up.gif] Yup!

Compliments of Raveneau & Coche Dury - white burgundy.

Tim, forgive me the personal comment but as I was reading your list I was thinking

“I wonder how OLD he is?”

I’m not asking really – but I will observe that everything on that list says “maturity” to me.

I do realize that people don’t have to be old to be wise.

Congratulations on all those multiple realizations.

And stay away from Barolo and Burgundy.

Bordeaux prices have come down.

hey frank - I’m 38. Just started getting really into wine about 5 years ago. Classic jump in with both feet, signed up for every list under the stars and bought with reckless abandon.

Thankfully realized I’m not a big red burgundy fan before I spent too much. But, the Nebbiolo thing has given me some cause for concern.

Yea my big ah ha moment was drinking so great Burgs…that took me over to the dark side. I’m now a buyer.

That is a very bold and ridiculous statement. Try some older bdx that he gave 100 to and report back.

Todd and Charlie… think about me. I’ve been collecting Barolo and Burg for years… /sigh.

this really rang true to me thought

  • How easy it is to not buy over $50 bottles and how good many < $30 bottles are

There’s a lot of very good moderately price wine out there, even Barolo and Burg - people chase labels too much sometimes.

My ‘ah ha’ moments were making great discoveries:

2007 EMH Cabernet Sauvignon Black Cat
Paumanok
Sojourn

All tasted with the owner. This board offers so many opportunities! [thankyou.gif]

aged bordeaux rocks

Realizing just how great Massandra is, having tasted the following . . .

1929 Massandra Tokay Ai Danil
1937 Massandra Rose Muscat
1953 Massandra Red Stone White Muscat

Nebbiolo, where have you been all my life?

My big ah ha was when I realized that lots of people want to watch online videos of me drinking wine and eating good food. And then I had a lot of ha ha moments because my life is awesome.

Discovering that there were far better wines being made in Michigan’s Leelanau Peninsula , and in greater numbers, than I had previously realized. (Don’t laugh, it’s true.)

Cheers,

geo

Anybody have an ‘ah ha’ moment in discovering that there was a forum where wine lovers could speak freely, interact shamelessly with ITB’ers and winemakers, and, when feeling REALLY frisky, post comments and maybe photos that had food in them inside the WINE TALK forum???

Sounds cool! What’s the URL? neener
