Berserkers, I’ve long wanted a website that had a clear, easily searchable, and up to date source of information for corkage policies across the world. I get the feeling you do too…
The goal of WTC is to be the definitive place for you to find local restaurants that accept the bottles you want to bring.
All the restaurants populate on a searchable map and have the important details for making informed decisions (Corkage fees, bottle limits, lower cost days, cuisine, etc.)
Key things:
100% totally free. Always & forever.
No accounts needed.
Crowd sourced. Anyone can submit a restaurant or update an existing one.
Site improvements: If you have any requests for new features or things you think would help improve the site, feel free to let me know in the comments.
Call to action: I’ll be continuing to add my spots, but please help out by adding your favorite BYOB spots too! The more information we have, the more useful the website is for everyone.
Well this is cool! I’ll start adding to the database
Perhaps there ought to be an option box re/glassware. I know a lot of casual restaurants that may allow corkage but because they don’t have a wine program, also don’t have good (or in some cases any) stemware.
It won’t let me search for a location without granting access to my location. I prefer not to do that. I am not sure why it even prompts me to enter a city if it won’t use what I enter.
Totally understand your POV on the location. When searching a city, the city only shows up if there are restaurants uploaded to the website in that city. I’ll think of a smoother way to adjust that experience!
A great corkage site allows me to answer the following questions:
I am going to restaurant [z] - do they allow corkage on the day I plan to attend? If so, what is the price for what I plan to bring (is it per bottle? Per 750?) and what, if any, are the constraints (number of bottles per person or per table, bottle cannot be on the list, etc)?
I am looking to dine out on day [y] - which restaurants (by location, by type, etc) offer corkage?
I am looking for which days offer the best corkage and which restaurants are those? Can I filter by neighborhood? Type of restaurant? Do you have other information about the restaurant that would assist me like: stem quality? General staff rating specially for corkage?
I want to find the best place for corkage - can I see which places are the most amenable to corkage in terms of wine service, supporting list, stemware, and price?
I want to host a wine dinner. Which restaurants offer a private dining room (PDR) which allows corkage? What are the corkage terms in the PDR (is there a somm fee? Is there a blanket corkage charge for unlimited corkage?)
A good question - if this is crowdsourced, the data model should allow for multiple people giving information on each piece for data, including +1/-1 to show whether this is verified or not by others. It should be timestamped for latest updates. If newer updates are very different from older updates, the aggregate number should either show low confidence or an annotation showing disagreement.
The use case of a restaurant changing their policy should come with a policy change flag, which has the user acknowledging they are entering new and different info.
