What natural wine did you open today?

2021 le bois (Cab Franc) from Beau Paysage

Beautiful texture, not lean (or green) at all, just a great wine.

So, I should be a bit more elaborate. I used to buy a bunch for immediate consumption back before covid. Then I bought a case and forgot all about it, and this bottle is one of those that’s just been hanging out in my cellar for a while. Most of them upon release was very shrill and had a VA component, but this specific vintage is very warm, and so it packs a lot more fruit than the rest. Pleasantly surprised, and it seems to be on a good trajectory for aging more.

Interesting. I remember the early vintages being fairly generous with fruit, far from shrill, albeit in a ‘lifted’ natural style. That would have been 04, 05, 06.

I have not had the pleasure of those first vintages, but they sound very good. My experience lies only with '16-'19. I’ve quite enjoyed his negoce project with Barbera and Moscato. Very fresh and fruity.

Domaine des Cavarodes, Poulsard de Chemenot 2022
Very pretty Poulsard from Étienne. Light, pale ruby with a grainy vibe. Slight carbonic nose with a bit of burnt rubber that dissipated, pomegranate, dark berries, and forest floor which I didn’t expect. Slightly effervescent mouth which slowly blew off. Very nice— it outperforms anything in the Jura at that price point(22€).

Can you cool guys share some thoughts on Valentin morel Jura whites? Found a few recent chard and savagnin for attractive prices but can’t get a good read on them. His recent savagnin bottles are more macerated and orange?

This was pretty enjoyable last night. Warm fruited and dense given the vintage. Really liked it

And this too was no exception. Very spicy and fruitful

Disappointing. Grand Orgues 22.
Very dense and chewy. Reductive. I’m sure it will be fine in time.

Is it the photo or was it rather cloudy and with a little fizz? It certainly looks dodgy!

That’s not unusual for the producer though.

Complex nose, with an array of citrus fruits, green apple and a hint of oxidative character.
High, pronounced acidity provides excellent tension and carries through s long finish.

The wine felt open and ready from the first pour, showing little evolution over the two hours it was enjoyed. I really liked it, though it clearly found its best expression alongside food, where the acidity felt better balanced.

Opened this last Sunday and it was stunning!

Really enjoyed this last night:

Julien Bresteau - Qui? Ricou - Vin de France 2023

100% chenin from Anjou, 10.5% ABV.

Notes of freesias, lemon and almond on the nose, then a very fresh mouthful of lemon, a touch of lime, subtle white peach, with hints of hazelnut, leading towards a light but persistent finish. All very civilized, nothing obtrusive, just enough tension and minerality, very pure - my sort of wine! Not tippy-top quality but very good and at 25 euros (Les Caves du Panthéon), well worth trying. 93 pts

From what I understand, this was his first vintage after 15 years at La Grange Aux Belles. He makes the wine but doesn’t grow it, working with one organic grower.

I shall definitely seek out more, but I expect the 2023s are long gone, so I shall wait until the 2025 vintage comes out.

Thank you for sharing this…I’m still sitting on a magnum of 2012 of this same wine. Good to know they go long…

12 was a tough vintage with frost and hail i believe. i would probably take a look at drinking the mag given my experience with the 750 being quite ready to go with only 5-6 years in bottle.

A bit of gas upon opening and then some really pure fruit.

Quite good.

curious how her wines at domaine d’eugenie will be! i enjoyed her 17s and in retrospect they came across as deeper, more structured and serious than a lot of the highly stylized new school burgundy currently en vogue.

I also enjoyed those, I must still have a case or two somewhere (the reds, never had her white). Is her stint at Ch. Grillet considered a success? It has been very quiet about the estate lately.
