What natural wine did you open today?

Oddly his NY importer specializes in spirits, I can see why he liked Meyer.

seems to be pricier in europe than in the states!

i think the wine sees some sous voile action and i read one note that likened it to a vin jaune. i guess next time i am drinking with some royalty from monaco i will have to request them to pop a bottle from their stash :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

No volatility on the reds?

Negligible issues with Mouse (maybe one out of twenty four).
VA, I cannot really tell you as I am not super sensitive and it is not something that I really track.

(The VA levels are on the back of the Euro bottles)

Pretty good Chenin.

High slightly volatile acidic nature. Everything apples and lemon. Very reductive. Notes of salt and sesame. A hint of some baking spices.

It doesn’t scream Chenin. Would probably have guessed Jura Chardonnay blind. If you can handle the acidic nature of it, it is a nice wine. No traces of any flaws.

I would have liked it to have a bit more fruit and body to play against the acidity, but still enjoying it a lot and happy to have two more.

We had a little Auvergne tasting (“Beauger and friends”) yesterday. This is really such an interesting and unique region with excellent and quality driven producers. I definitely don’t have or drink enough Auvergne wines…

  • 2015 Domaine Pierre Beauger Rotten Highway - France, Vin de France (6/8/2025)
Tasted next to the 2016 RH. Really interesting nose with intense flavors of apricot, orange, stone fruit, some botrytis, and minerals. Nice acidity on the palate with ripe fruit, guava, oranges, and more minerals. Nice finish that lingers for a while. There's so much going on and it continuously changes in the glass. The wine is extremely ripe, but well balanced and completely dry. What a unique, singular expression of Sauvignon Blanc! (95 points)
  • 2016 Domaine Pierre Beauger Rotten Highway - France, Vin de France (6/8/2025)
Tasted next to the 2015 RH. This was significantly funkier on the nose with notes of lemon, tropical fruit, brett, smoke, and a bit of reduction. Similar intensity and nice acidity on the palate with more structure and textural mouthfeel, apricot flavors, and a bit of citrus. Nice finish. Overall, this was very interesting but perhaps a little more weird compared to the 2015. Much lower alcohol (10.37% vs 14.4%) and quite a bit more tannic with noticeable brett. This may significantly benefit from a few years in the cellar. 92++ (92 points)
  • 2018 Domaine Pierre Beauger PN18 - France, Vin de France (6/8/2025)
Lovely nose with a hint of reduction that blew off with air, followed by notes of cherries, roses, and pine needles. The nose feels very Burgundian and quite complex. Nice acidity on the palate with more cherries, red berries, blood orange, and tart fruit. Long finish. Beautiful wine that really blossomed with air. This should be very special in 5-10 years. 94-95+ (94 points)
  • 2018 L'Arbre Blanc (Frederic Gounan) Vin de France Les Grandes Orgues - France, Vin de France (6/8/2025)
Very nice nose with blood orange, red cherries, and tart fruit. High acidity on the palate with flavors of red cherries, raspberries, white pepper, and berries. Nice finish. This is a lovely wine that needs time to fully shine. At the moment it's very primary and sharp with tart but balanced flavors. I'd give it 5-7+ years to fully come together. 93-94++ (93 points)
  • 2018 Mito Inoue Flow - France, Loire Valley, Côtes d'Auvergne (6/8/2025)
Really pretty nose with elegant notes of cherries, flowers, red berries, and just a tiny hint of brett. Great acidity on the palate with more tart cherries, strawberries, and forest floor notes. Long finish. This was super good. What an interesting, elegant, and unique expression of Gamay! (95 points)

That reminds me of one of my favorite producers back in the day, Domaine Peyra. I’ve forgotten what happened to their vineyards. Anyone know?

From a quick search I couldn’t tell you much else than it seems Domaine de Boheme is set up in their old cellar, but that doesn’t do much. Maupertuis seems to have bought his own plots after they went bankrupt.

Maybe Henri Chauvet, or one of the other new guys have bought the plots?

2016 vintage, best showing yet. quite a lot of petrol to start, then some honey comb and mature fruit. eventually very floral and jasmin like notes appear all with a great saline finish. continues to evolve after an hour of air. not sure it shows a lot of typicity but a really fun drink.

Two really fun, easy drinking natural wines. Nothing crazy complex, just perfect for a summer BBQ…

Foillard Fleurie 2022

Very young (duh), so primary it’s sherberty. Blueberry and plums. Intense, powerful stuff. Let it calm.

I didn’t want to like the Zeroine wines but the few I’ve had were really good.

The most natural of wines? Possibly when it comes to filtration as I got part of the skin in the bottle/glass! A bit of a surprise to say the least :joy:

However the quality of this wine is terrific, kept going for a week without losing any pace. A big wine, yet very fresh and it’s easy to dismiss higher alcohol wines these days but this is very well balanced with only a hint of alcohol.

  • Domaine de la Tournelle - Savagnin Voile 2016

Upon opening, the bottle was lightning captured in a bottle. It needed half a day to open up somewhat and then it became approachable. Compared to other similar cuvées, this stands apart by its fruit, which to me is very positive and really distinct. Most other sous voile wines, and here I mean sous voile as in 5 years of voile and not the 7 like a classic VJ, are to me always very heavy sotolon forward things of curry and spice with fruit almost on a secondary note. As for the mouth, this is very green apple dominant with a piercing acidity and a long finish. There’s a slight sweetness to the finish, which is peach-like, but I could be a little off.

What I find so nice about this cuvee is that normally, to me, the other SV wines can be very divided — Sotolon — Fruit — Acidity. However, this cuvée is very harmonic in that everything is joined from the first sip. It’s a very long time ago that I had the VJ, but that too was very beautiful. Paid some 45€, and that’s perfectly fine.

Think I already wrote about this wine and vintage further up.

But these wines are so damn good with a few years of bottle age. And consistent. One of the winemakers that just delivers great wines, at affordable prices, year in year out.

At the 30€ i paid for this i have a hard time finding better value in Jura these days.

Theulot-Juillot Bourgogne 2022
This is a rare surprise from the following situation:
Tasting at a friend’s restaurant, too many bottles drunk, I order stuff before leaving, I go get said bottles a few days later.

This is a lovely Bourgogne rouge. On the lean side but the oak adds just the right amount of body and spice. Fun wine. My first and only vintage so take it for what it’s worth.

Not really remarkable. A bit of yeasty funk on the nose. Easy drinking Gamay/Pinot blend.

  • 2020 Claire et Florent Bejon Les Gruches - France, Vin de France (7/2/2025)
Lovely nose with orchard fruit, minerals, a hint of bruised apples, jasmine, and citrus notes. Great acidity with similar flavors, a bit of salinity, and crushed rocks on the palate. Nice finish. This is a really pretty natural Chenin that has good complexity and should age well in the near term. (93 points)

Thanks for the note on this.

Are the Hautes-Côtes more interesting?

I will say the prices are pretty fair, La Bottiere was 11€ I think.

I did try a red. Notes on here probably.

I don’t remember the price but I think it was more than that.
