What Kind Of Varietal Is On My Back Fence?

This vine is from a cutting from France, I think the southern part, actually. The vine is roughly 3 years old and this is the first year I have fruit, lots of it.

Based on the photos below, is it possible to know what varietal this is? Do I need to provide another photo or two to help?

If it is a varietal, it must give the variety on the label.

[Bob.Fleming made me do it. ]

Hard to say what cultivar it is. Did it come from a vineyard or someone’s yard? I’m guessing the latter as it looks very table grape-ish. Also, does the underside of the leaf have hair (either on the veins and/or leaf surface) or is it completely devoid of hair? Another key question: Is it a white or red? You should know in another month or two. Finally, do you have more than one grape vine growing? The leaf to the right of the cluster in the third photo is markedly different than the leaf in the first photo.

Oh no! While I have no idea what grape is growing, I know this thread will become fodder for the “variety vs. varietal” police. While they’re not as prickly as the grammar patrol, you’re still in for a blog flogging (damn, I like “blogging flogging” better, but I fear the grammar gendarmes!). [wink.gif]

Thompson’s seedless ;¬)

VERY large berries there, I’m going with table grapes.

I’m fairly certain that what you have growing are grapes.

Do they have seeds?

Mr Officer, single vine, no hair on the underside of the leaves and I know the grapes will be red. Does that help get us closer to knowing?

Thomas, 2 seeds inside, comprising a decent amount of the inside space.

selection massale!

I’m still coming up blank. Leaf-wise, it’s somewhat similar to Cot (open “V” petiolar sinus, undivided or 3-lobed, glaborous on the underside). But Cot has round berries. Your berries are quite elliptical and loose like Poulsard. But based on the leaves, it’s obviously not Poulsard. Gamay? Possible I suppose. It does have elliptical berries but they’re typically not as long as these. And unless I’m mistaken, Gamay typically has anthocyanin coloring of the veins. Are new leaves at the shoot tips yellow with bronze spots? Man, there are a hundred varieties I can say it isn’t but really tough to say what it is. I still suspect a table grape. Do you know from where the cutting was taken? All you say is the south of France. That’s a large area. Can you be more specific? And was it actually taken from a vineyard?

Mr O, let me press on the memory of my wife’s friend who gifted me the vine and see if I can gather some better G2. I know her son is making wine from these same grapes, as he has a vine at his house in the OC where the fruit also grows.

If all else fails, for $325 you can submit a sample of FPS and they’ll look up its DNA in a database of cultivars.

Vitus vinifera subspecies vinifera?
This is a European common grape used for eating, making raisins or in some cases wine.
